Sims 4 crashes repeatedly
New laptop purchased August 2023. Every other game I play regularly installs and runs just fine (BG3, Cyberpunk 2077, GW2, ESO, GTA V, etc) except for Sims 4. It has never run properly on this new laptop. I have exhausted everything I know to do and contacted support (CASE #168058477) which was no help.
What happens:
- Sims 4 is launched from the EA app or from the executable directly (which method does not impact).
- Sims will *usually* load to the home screen where you can select to continue your game or start new save. Sometimes it crashes before this point.
- Usually the game will crash just sitting on this home screen.
- Sometimes it will stay running long enough that I can click to continue my save game. Then it will crash while loading that save.
- If I can get it to actually load into the save game, I can usually run it for a few minutes up to an hour before it crashes, but it always crashes.
There is a generic error written to the Windows event log when this happens which I've attached along with the other crash logs I can find in the Sims directory.
What I have done to troubleshoot this so far (not necessarily in order):
- Reboot PC (obviously)
- Run as Admin
- Tried various compatibility settings for Windows 8, 7, etc
- Reinstalled Sims 4 (3 times) - EA app crashes during the download and install though each time which is odd
- Reinstalled EA (twice)
- Reinstalled latest graphics driver (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU)
- ((NOTE)) the GPU was not in the Sims graphics card database but that should not be a blocker. It well meets minimum specs for TS4.
- Uninstalled GeForce Experience
- Uninstalled Alienware command center (in case of potential conflict with game profiles)
- Performed clean boot (only things running were basic Windows services, disabled antivirus, EA background service, EA app, Sims 4, still crashed)
- Disabled antivirus
- Game profile set to always use the Nvidia graphics card
- Disabled Xbox game bar
- Disabled Nvidia game overlay
- Disabled EA app's game overlay
- Created exclusions for TS4 in Windows exploit protection to disable DEP and other settings
- Reinstalled the VC redistributables
- Tried launching with no network connection (wifi disabled)
- Verified all drivers and OS patches are up to date
- Ended up making some bad changes to the OS that locked me out (luckily I had created a restore point before doing all the OS changes)
- Oddly enough the game was stable briefly after doing the OS restore but then started crashing again after a reboot
- Tried running DebugView and Process Monitor to get an idea of why it was crashing. I actually have better success getting the app stable when these are running.
- Disabled Dolby Atmos (this was causing issue with BG3 but had no impact it seems on TS4)
I have mods I want to use, but the game isn't stable enough to even apply them so all of this troubleshooting has been with 0 game modifications at all. Every time I think I have it stable after a change, I reboot or restart the game and it just starts crashing all over again.
It won't let me attach more than 3 files here so I have dxdiag, lastcrash, and the Windows application event that occurs on crash. Please someone help!
((EDIT)) I can't post last crash or the last exception log here apparently))
