Sims 4 Crashes

1. Sims 4 randomly crashes to a black or white screen. I have to reboot desktop.

2. Reliability monitor shows two of the below errors

3. I don't have a lastcrash.txt file

4. I'm using custom content/mods from the houses in the gallery.

5. There is no pattern to the crashes and it is constant.

It went great for several hours but just crashes again. I’ll check the reliability monitor in morning. Can I start with new folder and move anything over randomly and test?

thank you for the great advice on this!

@abc1190706171  The save files look fine, no bloating there.  It would be interesting to see what the Reliability Monitor said about the newest crash, although not all crashes generate an error report.  Still, the lack of a software error is useful information too.

Yes, you can move over your content in any order you want.  The order doesn't really matter, as long as all the files get tested.  It might be worth testing your saves with no mods or custom content present though; you don't have to save the game, just see whether you get another crash.

Most of the files in the user folder can actually be left behind; the game will create new ones as necessary.  Here's a complete list of the user content, so you'll know what you need to preserve and what will be replaced.

I’m confused on this. The game will create a new folder and files which is ok. I have created households and that’s what I want to move back into the new folder. Which files and folders should I move from old to new sims4 folder to test and get my game creation back?

@abc1190706171  The article I linked explains what each file or folder is within the Sims 4 user folder: what data it contains and whether you'd need to keep it or can just let the game create a new one.

I added one folder at a time and tested. All worked fine until I added the Tray folder and after some time it lagged and then crashed.

@abc1190706171  It's unusual for the contents of a Tray folder to cause issues, but maybe if yours is particularly large, it could be a problem.  One thing you could try is deleting the in-game Library entries you don't want anymore.  Or, if you want to keep everything, set aside the entire Tray folder, and if you later want some household or build you've created, you can restore that version of Tray long enough to grab the item(s) you want.

In terms of the files inside Tray, each Library entry has four or five corresponding files.  You can sort by modified date to see which ones are for the same item: they'll all have exactly the same timestamp.
