@princessdoughnut Try forcing the game to open in windowed mode. Go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, open Options.ini, search for fullscreen , and set it to 0 (zero). If this helps, you can return to fullscreen mode once you reach the Main Menu, but at the same time, set the in-game resolution to match the resolution of your laptop screen.
If that doesn't make a difference, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.
