Sims 4 Lagging - very frusting

Hello, my Sims 4 recently started lagging. I don't have any mods installed. I've tried repairing the game and removing all the saves but the game is still laggy.

It runs on medium/low settings with some lag but I'm very disappointed as I was able to run the game on High settings (and GE Force Experience also recommends high settings). My DxDiag is attached. Hope someone can help.

  • @weye13  The lagging could easily be caused by your laptop only having 4 GB RAM installed.  Did it ship like that?  I'd expect a model like yours to have at least 8 GB installed.  And even though your other hardware is good enough for ultra settings, not having enough memory will make the game lag to some degree no matter what settings you use.

There are no Sims 4 errors in your dxdiag, which doesn't mean much since the dxdiag only lists the last ten errors overall.  The Sims 3 errors suggest an issue with the graphics driver, and there are a couple of errors that list Nvidia software as well.  Since you have the newest driver from Nvidia, you'll need to do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver.  Download Display Driver Uninstaller from here:

    https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3216

You can get a fresh copy of the Nvidia driver here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/162106/en-us

Next, take your computer completely offline—disable wifi and/or pull the ethernet cord—and double-click the DDU.exe.  Take note of where the file will land, and click Extract.  If it's easier, you can copy the path and then paste it into the address bar in a File Explorer window.  Open the folder and then launch Display Driver Uninstaller.exe, and you'll get a message that you're not in Safe Mode.  Click OK, then go to Options and enable Safe Mode dialog.  Here's a screenshot of what your options should look like; make sure the box in red is checked:

Close options, and the DDU, and then open the DDU.exe again.  For launch options, choose "Safe Mode (Recommended)," and then click Reboot to Safe Mode (you'll need your password, so find it before rebooting).  Once you login, you'll see this:

In the blue box, choose GPU, then Nvidia if it's not already showing.  Then click Clean and Restart (red box).

Your computer will restart, and once it does, install the new driver.  Reboot again, go back online, and test the game.  If you're still seeing the same issues, let me know.

It should also be noted that your C drive is getting low on space.  It's not critical yet, but it would be better to clear at least another 5-10 GB.

  • @weye13  The minidump is likely not related to the game lagging, and it's not the GPU driver errors listed in your dxdiag.  That's a good thing in that it means those errors aren't as recent.  By the way, not all dump files are related to BSODs; some are recorded from other kinds of errors, like when the video driver stops working.

Anyway, I asked for a second opinion on this one, since I haven't been seeing why you're getting such bad lag, and that second opinion recommends to clean uninstall both drivers, Intel and Nvidia.  The overall instructions are the same, but the order of operations matters: uninstall the Nvidia driver first, then the Intel driver; install the new Intel driver first, then the Nvidia driver.  Try it first with the drivers from Lenovo.  They're a bit old, but they were tailored for your laptop.  You can get them here, under "Display and Video Graphics":

    https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y520-15ikbn/80wk/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Display%20and%20Video%20Graphics

It's a good idea to download the newest Nvidia and Intel drivers too, in case the ones from Lenovo are too old for your version of Windows.  If you try to install one of the Lenovo drivers and see an error, install the newest one instead.  You know where to find the Nvidia driver; here's the stable version from Intel:

We uninstalled the current drivers and installed the drivers from Lenovo based on what you said and although there were improvements, Sims 4 was still slow. It felt like a jump from 2 fps to 10 fps or so but we're not sure. We dialed down the graphics settings to Medium and that gave a bit more of a boost (maybe 15-20 fps?) but again we didn't have to lower the settings before just to play.

It's also weird since we have another laptop just like this one with updated drivers (not the Lenovo ones but the latest ones) and that laptop doesn't seem to have the same problem. (Note: There was a time when that laptop slowed down with all games but we used the solution you gave for Sims 4, i.e. DDU+install new drivers and it never slowed down since then.)

  • @weye13  Sorry for the late reply.  Please run chkdsk:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste "chkdsk /f /r c:" without quotes, and enter
    • You'll be asked to allow a restart; say yes
    • When the scan is done, hit Windows key-X again, and choose Command prompt (admin) or Powershell (admin) again
    • Copy and paste this command without the outside quotes: "get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt"
    • A .txt file with the chkdsk results will appear on your desktop.  Please attach it to a post.

And test your RAM.  MemTest86 is a lot more thorough than the built-in Windows tool.  You do need a USB stick you don't mind erasing though.  The free version is fine; here's where to get it, and a guide for using it.

Hi, so we're performed the disk check and the log file is already included here. We haven't performed the memcheck yet as we didn't have time but we'll probably be able to get it by tomorrow or so. Should we also perform the disk check for other drives though? Anyway, let me know. Thanks again!

  • @weye13  If you have Sims 4 installed on or have moved Documents to another drive, then yes, run chkdsk on that drive too.  (I can't tell based on the free storage on C.)  Do you have an external drive plugged in while you play?  If so, and Sims 4 isn't installed on it, please try running the game with the external removed.

  • @weye13Recently, I came back to TS4 and had the same issue. I tried the origin repair and this worked for me. Hope this helps. Not sure i will have the lag back later on but for now, I don't have any.
