Sims 4 not launching after Oct 22 update

Hello. TS4 was launching just fine offline last week, so I decided to update to the latest version. A major reason I don't update the game as much is probably because there's always SOME issue with the updates, and of course, I was not disappointed. After the update, the game refuses to launch. Here's the latest from the performance manager.

Seeing as how others have had similar issues, I've tried forcing the game to use DX11 or 9 to no avail.

My dxdiag file is attached. Can I get another eye on it to see what I'm missing? I'm pretty sure all my drivers are up-to-date.

  • @puzzlezaddictIt had nothing to do with my graphics drivers.

I recalled something you mentioned about the failing module being d3d11.dll, which is for DX11. Which technically shouldn't be loading if I'm forcing the game to run DX9.

I re-downloaded DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from microsoft.com to repair. I had to delete d3d11.dll from the system32 folder first (which is a bit tricky) because the error message kept saying that the DirectX was up-to-date. After deletion, I ran the web installer to "reinstall" DX11 [which still shouldn't be loading as the game should be running DX9 but oh well].

But anyways, the game is loading now. I just have to update mods and such.

    Thanks for your help.

  • @Right4ngle-lurks  Thanks for the dxdiag and error report.  The faulting module is d3d11.dll, which is a part of DirectX 11.  I'm not sure why trying to force DirectX 9 mode hasn't helped, but you should be able to play in DX11 mode anyway.  Since you can't directly reinstall DX11 itself, please run a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Try again to play, and if you get the same error, please clear the EA App's cache:

    https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/

and repair the game (again, if you have already); the option is in the EA App game library, under Sims 4 > Manage.

    Thanks for the reply.

The output from the sfc scan was:

    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
    1. Restarted.
    2. Up-to-date on Windows Update.
    3. Cleared the EA App cache.
    4. Repairing the game was actually the first step I did, but I've done it again.
    5. Restarted again for profit.

    Error still persists.

I'll keep troubleshooting, but if anything else comes to mind, please let me know. Thanks again for your help.

@Right4ngle-lurks  Please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of both graphics drivers.  Here's how:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

Use this driver for the integrated graphics:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/processors/ryzen/ryzen-5000-series/amd-ryzen-7-5800h.html

and this one (Adrenalin edition) for the dedicated card:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/graphics/radeon-rx/radeon-rx-6000-series/amd-radeon-rx-6600m.html

Download the new drivers before taking your laptop offline.  DDU should remove both drivers at once, but run it again just to check.  Once you've done that, restart the laptop, still offline, and install the driver for the iGPU, then restart again and install the driver for the dedicated card.  Restart once more and try to run Sims 4.
