Sims 4 Performance and Crashing (Crash on Travel, Slow Load Time)

Hi there, I have been experiencing various issues with Sims 4 in the last few months, some of which have almost cost me my save files due to possible corruption; thankfully, I was able to revert back to a few auto-saves that only cost me about two or three sim days. Since then, I have been on a bit of a quest to try and get these issues resolved.

The first issue relates to this topic:

Link: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-4/Game-crashes-everytime-I-SAVE-or-TRAVEL/td-p/3451485

Summary: I have been experiencing crashes at random instances when I save or travel.

Per my notes, I have done the following so far to attempt to resolve this issue:

- Cleared Cache files from Sims 4 folder

- Moved all Save files out of Sims 4 directory and re-inputted them.

- Deleted all system-generated Sims that may have conflicted with custom content.

- Removed all custom content.

- Repaired Installation through Origin

- Reinstalled Sims 4 and all Stuff/Expansion packs.

- Disabled Origin In-Game.

- Toggled Laptop Mode On/Off

- Ran Sims 4 as a Windows Administrator (Even changed Windows Users entirely)

- Replaced Video Card (Was using an ATI before, now switched to an nVidia.)
- Upgraded RAM (Went from 12GB to 24GB, can upgrade to a maximum of 32 GB if I wish.)

- Replaced Router and Network Adapter (Not relevent, but was experiencing intermittent Download and Upload delays, replacing these seemed to stabilize that issue.)

Per some research I found while perusing various Sim sites, I was told that in a 64-bit operating system it is a rather common occurrance for Sims 4 to automatically crash once RAM usage approaches 3.6 GB, this seems to be the case from what I am running into in Sims 4.

As for my save file, it appears to be 5195 KB, which doesn't appear that large.

An odd test I did as well, I managed to swap computers entirely, to a lower-performing computer with 8 GB of RAM, and the game seems to be running...although of course slower due to the lower RAM and lower graphics card.

As a temporary not-so-reliable-workaround, I have been manually saving my game at 5-minute intervals, this is very inconvenient for a player, especially as the Save occasionally crashes.

--------------------------------------------

Second issue has to do with long load times when accessing lots, even empty lots. This at first did not bother me much because I am used to long load times since I also play Sims 2 on occasion. The steps I have taken so far are the same as above, and I have seen no change in performance.

Note: Per this community's restrictions, I am unable to post my DxDiag.txt file in a spoiler tag in this opening post, so I shall do so in a reply.

    Update 8/16/15

I have replicated the removal of inventory items from various sims on different lots now multiple times, it seems to be specific to when items are on the Sims themselves, not in regards to when they are in containers such as say, a refrigerator.

Things I have tested so far:

    - Moving huge amounts of fruits/vegetables/herbs from Sim inventory into Refrigerator, then re-loading the game (Same lot) seems to reduce the memory usage for that lot. (For example, I love to grow Grapes/Blackberries, so I have a huge amount of them on my Sims. If I put these into the refrigerator, this seems to resolve memory load on the lot they are in.) This also works with selling the items instead of just putting them somewhere else. (There is a slight problem with this resolution, as if you put items into your fridge, you can't use them if you go to the Science Career location. Perhaps there can be a fix implemented to correct this, or perhaps allow for these items to be used from a Household Inventory?)

    - Moving multiple items out of inventory (Not just large stacks of items, but a large collection such as various serums, spoiled food, upgrade parts, collectibles, fish, etc.) seems to reduce load time as well, especially when opening/closing inventory.

    - Changing between lots seems to be a good troubleshooting step as well, forcing the previous lot that was played to initialize. This is good for lots that have a lot of work put into them and have started crashing regularly. Switch to another lot, then back to your main lot. (Note: Another bug has been found in this if you play various lots, namely your Sims that are supposed to be at work will appear at home, and will be considered late for work.)

Hope these findings help, they really opened a lot of possibilities for me!

  • Date: 9/3/15 (Although issue has been occurring since about April.)

    Time: 11:59 PM, September 2nd.

Type of Issue: Gameplay / Performance

Description: This might be a little difficult to explain, however I will do my best. During some bouts of gameplay, I am running into unusual "delays" during the game where nothing is able to be selected (nothing highlights) and you are also unable to Pause the game in any way. However, a few moments later (On average this comes out to be about 20-30 seconds) the game will suddenly snap back into performing again, however sometimes the same issue can arise about 2-3 seconds after it's "caught up" this way.

The game itself does not completely freeze, as Sims are still moving and non-played sims will still move to where they last were moving before stopping and doing nothing. Further, if your sim had actions they were doing already queued, they will move as if going to do these queued actions, but will not actually perform them, they will stop just short of it and wait. (I tested this multiple times with trying to get a sim to take a shower, and every time this issue kicked in, they would stand just outside the shower and not do anything.)

I've tried multiple things to try and resolve this issue, as it somewhat relates to my previous issue listed below, however it is a different unexpected behavior:

    Previous issue Link: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-4/Sims-4-Performance-and-Crashing-Crash-on-Travel-Slow-Load-Time/m-p/4708641#U4708641

If you request further information or need a copy of my DXDiag, it is provided in the previous link, I can also provide it here for easier access.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do, I have been trying to resolve this issue for months now without any success; I have even gone as far as to increase the RAM on my computer and move the installation of both Origin and Sims 4 to a separate drive to accommodate for space.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,

It is the same issue to a degree, the previous issue in the thread was about it crashing at a certain memory usage range. I've been working around that by keeping my task manager up to monitor memory usage.

I have had this issue occur if I start new households, and occasionally when I have started a new game, I did have to create a new game at one point for testing purposes due to an issue with file damage.

The link you provided does indeed sound like what I am running into with this issue, I will see what I can do about getting some information to help isolate the issue further.

If it's the same, it would be great if you could provide the information asked for on the first page.

Just continue posting in that thread than since that is monitored by the devs.

I have the same issue. Minor glitches and bugs aside, my game crashes so frequently when playing my main save that it has been rendered unplayable.

Like others, "The Sims 4 has stopped working" error messages and resulting crashes are triggered by any attempt to save (the game, a lot to my library, etc.), when my Sims attempt to travel, and/or when simply trying to load a household. I can sometimes get in an play for a bit, but none of my Sims can travel. I do not play with mods or cc, unless I have unknowingly downloaded either from the gallery. The most obvious head-scratcher is my save inexplicably being 75K+ KB large.

I've scoured the main TS4 forums and these EA Answers HQ forum and have attempted the following without resolution:

    • repairing in Origin and assuring I wasn't missing a patch/update.
    • moving, relaunching, and pasting the saves file, etc., back in (this -> http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-4/Game-crashes-everytime-I-SAVE-or-TRAVEL/m-p/3451757/highlight/false#M158). The problem returned once I pasted the save file back in.
    • emptying some household inventories.
    • confirming my NVIDIA driver was up to date.
    • lowering graphics in-game from high to medium.
    • disabling laptop mode.
    • confirming available memory (see attached DxDiag).
    • disabling Origin in-game.
    • playing offline.
    • emptying my Sims 4 cache.
    • I tried rolling back to an earlier save but either there isn't one or I just can't figure out how to do it. I'm thinking I've only ever used this one save.

Someone suggested that I save all of my Sims and their lots to my library, launch anew, and dropping them all back in. I could do that (if I can save them without a crash) but I play about 20+ families that are (almost) all related to each other. If this fix means they lose all of their relationships, I'll have towns full of "relative-strangers" who may want to woohoo with each other and that's creepy... I also have not uninstalled/reinstalled my game or any packs, which has been suggested, for fear I would lose everything?

The problem started sometime after I downloaded/installed Spooky Stuff. I'm not saying Spooky Stuff is to blame, simply offering a date reference. Also, SS tried to install twice - or maybe it did, I don't know how to find out. I would assume a duplicate attempt would replace the original and not add double files. Around the same time frame while in-game, I also suffered a PC crash that was triggered by a Windows 10 update. May or may not be related, but felt it worth mentioning.

I have been able to start a brand new game/save that does not crash, so the error is somewhere in that particular game/save.

A link to a .zip copy of the save, a DxDiag, and one of several recent crash reports are in the spoiler below. If you need/want anything else, please let me know.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hey there dawnderee,

The issue unfortunately is now pretty much in EA's ball court now, a majority of these performance issues are as a result of the program not utilizing memory correctly, or due to it only being a 32-bit program, which results in the OS crashing it.

I wish there was more steps we could do here outside of the game itself, but we've exhausted all our options.

Thank you for the reply. It's just frustrating that it happens. I've lost an entire year's worth of game play, achievements, etc. I love the game, but these recurrent and unresolved issues are starting to make me love it a little less. It's very unfortunate.
