Stairs Can't Intersect With Walls

Hi guys! Okay, so I have an issue that's driving me bananapants. I am trying to recreate part of a build on a different lot and the stairs will NOT, under any circumstances, place against back walls. I get a message that says "stairs can't intersect with walls". I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The stairs placed fine on the original build. They STILL work fine on the original build. They will not place on the new build. Yes, I have CC, yes I have mods, no that's not the problem (I got so desperate I did the whole "move sims 4 folder to desktop for fresh game thing, removing ALL mods and CC and it still happened) Yes, my game is fully patched/updated.

This is what  I am trying to recreate. As you can see, the stairs are flush with the back wall and the second floor construction went just fine. No issues, no error messages.

Now, for whatever reason...things don't work. (I used black stairs so you can tell the difference lol)

Stairs place. I go to make a second floor and...

The minute I draw the back wall...the stairs disappear.

I go back downstairs to try and place them again and...they won't place. I get an error message saying stairs cannot intersect with walls.

Can someone please explain what is happening here? Do I need to make a foundation? I don't understand why they worked (and continue to work) in the original build but won't work on this one. I am literally copying the rooms from my library so like...nothing is different. I am ready to tear my hair out lol. *note* I have also tried adding the back porch part as seen in pic 1. It does not help. Stairs still won't place.

  • Stairs need at least 1 tile of space in front of them. In your original build, you have enough space between the wall and the stairs. In your new build, you are putting your stairs right up against the wall on the first level, which is fine -- but in order for them to be usable to get to the second level, they need that same space (flooring) at the top.

    Basically you're not building exactly the same thing. Those black stairs don't have a tile of space at the top, so they can't be placed. You need to put in a room that adds the extra tiles of flooring needed at the top of those stairs. Like this:

    And the upper level looks like this:

    These stairs aren't usable, if I try to drag them to make them wider, that's when I get the error "cannot intersect with walls". That's because they need the extra tile space, so here's how you fix it:

    I put in a "Flat Square" (under the Walls & Empty Rooms tab in build mode) over top the stairs to add that extra flooring, and voila:

    How it looks from the inside (looks like what you are trying to achieve from your original build):

    @nisawright13

    You placed these stairs in this way that the exit is blocked by the wall. Turn them over.
    Remember also that you can't hang anything on the wall along by which you are placing stairs.

    I don't work for EA

  • OMG thank you so much lol. I totally get it now and, following your instructions, I got it to do what I wanted.
  • Thank you for helping and letting me know where I was going wrong. I appreciate it so much 🙂
