Unable to install Sims 4 using Origin

Hello, I was wondering if you could help. I was cleaning my computer files and I think I accidentally uninstalled something to do with the Sims 4, as when I tried to play after that, it wanted me to install the game again. I know I still have the game files on my computer, since I have a Sims 4 program that takes up 15 GB. But whenever I try to install the game, it gives me an unknown error, which I have reported, (Your Report ID is: 116e077e702145c6) and says that the download has failed (image attached). As I know for a fact that I haven't accidentally deleted the actual game, but maybe some files that are required for installation, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get the game back up and working. It would be a shame to lose it since I have made a lot of in-game progress and would not want to purchase the game again. Please help. Thank you in advance.

@PoisonSoda3408  First, disable automatic game updates in Origin.  Hover over your username, select Application Settings, and under Application (the first header), scroll down to Client update to see the option.

From now on, always run Origin as an administrator: right-click on the Origin shortcut and select "Run as administrator."  This will help with permissions issues, if there are any.

Clear Origin's cache again, restart your computer, and open Origin, at which point it will hopefully not try to download anything.  Right-click on the Sims 4 icon, and see whether you have any more options.  If you can Repair, do so.  Otherwise, open a File Explorer window and figure out where the Sims 4 program files, or at least what's left of them, are located.

The first place to look is This PC > Program files (x86)\Origin Games, which is Origin's default install path.  If you don't see them there, search for Sims 4 on your computer, and find the folder that has subfolders like Data, Delta, Game, etc.  This is not the user data folder, with the saves, Tray, Mods, etc. folders inside.  If you're not sure what you're looking at, feel free to take a screenshot or two for confirmation.

Once you know where the program files are, go back to Origin and right-click on the Sims 4 icon again.  (If you tried to repair and it failed, clear Origin's cache and restart first.)  If you can Locate Game, click on that, and navigate to where you found the game's program files.  If you see a Download button, click that, but make sure the location it's downloading to exactly matches the current location of the program files—in this case, Origin should download only the missing files and then verify everything.

If none of these approaches work, the only other option is to manually delete the Sims 4 program files and redownload them from scratch.  If you still get an error, try downloading to a different location, e.g. make a folder in Program fles (x86) called "Sims Install" or something (just not Sims 4) and tell Origin to download to there.

  • @PoisonSoda3408  First of all, you don't need to buy the game again.  It's owned by your account, not your computer, so you can install it as many times as you want, on this comptuer or others.

Your saves, builds, and other user-generated content are stored in the Sims 4 user data folder in Documents\Electronic Arts.  It's a good idea to make a copy of that folder now, before you do anything else.  If you have an external hard drive or USB, copy the folder there; otherwise, copy it to your desktop.  This is to make sure if the original does somehow get deleted, you can still recover everything you've made.

Next, try clearing Origin's cache.  (If you're on a Mac, please let me know, and stop here.)

Restart your computer, open your Origin game library, right-click on the Sims 4 icon, and let me know what options you see.  If it's easier, you can take a screenshot.

Hello, @puzzlezaddict , thank you so much for replying! I have done all the steps and when I restarted my computer, Origin opened and my Sims 4 game started to install again automatically. First, it started verifying game files (image attached) and then it once again sent a message that the download has failed. Also, here are the options that it gives when I right click (also image attached).

@puzzlezaddict When I deleted the Sims 4 program files and redownloaded them, it worked! I can access my game now and all my saved households. Thank you so much for your help, I would not have been able to figure it out without you. 🙂
