I had this issue. Since the update for the University Expansion some mods cause the game to crash. It is because the modders have not updated their mods for the latest patch. I had to remove 4 mods from my mods folder that were the cause of my crashing. I moved them to a new folder not in the game while waiting for an update.
Here are the mods that I had that caused my game to crash in case you have them:
Death Angels Modpack by NeilDevBlog
Witches and Warlocks Modpack by NeilDevBlog
Expanded Mermaids by SpinningPlumbobs
Dazed Low Energy by GothyPanda
There are others that cause the issue too. It is best to remove all mods that do not deal with furniture, hair, clothing, and accessories and then put them back in a few at a time and reload the game each time to see if those mods cause the issue or not. It takes time, at least it did for me with how many Mods I have.

Though it's not just my game thats crashing, it's my whole PC.
And I've removed all mods and cc from the game too...
