unsupported video card

I've been playing the sims fine for the past 3 years on this computer, but when I opened my sims today it said I had an unsupported video card even though I've been playing the sims fine on this computer for years. I've attatched my dxdiag below if it helps. (explain in simple terms im not too good with computers)

  • @Magicalsimmer07  Somehow your graphics driver was uninstalled, and your computer is now using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, which Sims 4 doesn't support.  So the simple fix would be to reinstall the Nvidia driver.  I can't tell what GPU you have from your dxdiag—it's not showing up at all—but if it's 900-series or newer (so anything released in the last seven or eight years), the newest driver should work:

    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/198400/en-us/

However, before running the driver, please see whether your GPU is showing up at all.  Hit Windows key-X, select the Device Manager, expand the Display adapters section, and look for your Nvidia card.  If it's not there, please let me know.

  • Hi. so I'm not too sure what a GPU is, but when I click display adapters it says "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER", and when I click on that it says the device is working properly.. Should I still redownload the the NVIDIA driver? Because it says its working but clearly its not.

@Magicalsimmer07  Yes, please install the driver I linked earlier.  Your dxdiag clearly showed that there was no driver installed, and unless Windows corrected that in the interim (a possibility, for sure), you still don't have one.  If you get an error when trying to install this driver, please let me know what it says.

Either way, please test the game again.  Specifically, go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, move options.ini to the desktop, launch the game, and see whether you get the same error.  If you do, please post a new dxdiag.
