Weird movement lag

Hey all - hopefully this is the right place to post, but ever since the recent update (for the Crystals pack) I am experiencing some kind of freezing 2 miliseconds lag when i am moving my camera and just when my Sims are moving, like their movement has spikes and then my camera too. I never had this before and I normally play on custom high settings. Weird thing is, no matter what graphics settings I choose, it still happens, almost as if it has nothing to do with graphics settings - I set it to low, medium high, custom, even went into Nvidia and changed settings there, and it still happens just the same, also mods, no mods, doesn't matter.

Funnily enough, I have the same issue with Disney Dreamlight Valley (not asking for support on this obviously, just comparing, I reported to the devs on appropriate platform) after their new update (which was a day earlier) and no setting changes the problem and I play on Ultra with no issues normally.

Could it be something with the game(s) or perhaps with actual Nvidia drivers? It is fully updated, so I have no idea what else it could be. MSI, i7 11th gen, Nvidia RTX 3060, 16GB RAM., 1 TB SSD.

  • @EeveeTinn  While testing, please always have your laptop plugged in and charging, to avoid any power-saving features interfering with game performance.  Please try disabling Game Mode and Game Bar, both under Windows Settings > Gaming.

If that doesn't help, you can experiment with the in-game settings.  Toggle between windowed and fullscreen modes, and turn vertical sync on and off in fullscreen.  Please test each mode that you haven't already, first changing the setting and then restarting the game—sometimes a restart is necessary to see the full effects.  Please also double-check that the in-game resolution is set to 1920x1080 while in fullscreen mode.

If none of these settings makes a difference, please lower your laptop screen's refresh rate to the highest setting below its current 144 Hz.  That might be 120 or 100, or perhaps even lower, but it doesn't matter; the point is to run at below 144 Hz.  The option is under Settings > System > Display > Advanced.  Keep the current 1920x1080 resolution though.  Restart your computer and repeat the above tests.

While testing, please remove the Mods folder from your Sims 4 folder if you've added back your mods.  This is always best practice while troubleshooting, and in this case, it will also save you some time waiting for the game to load.  You don't need to save your progress.

  • @EeveeTinn  Please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

I will say though that the micro-stutters you're seeing (that's generally what they're called) are not uncommon in Sims 4.  Some players get them all the time, or all the time on certain lots, despite hardware that's more than sufficient to run the game on ultra settings.  I'm not saying this is unfixable, only that it might be.  Still, I'll be happy to troubleshoot as long as you're interested and I still have ideas.

@puzzlezaddict hey sorry for late reply, somehow the email notif ended up in spam 😅

I see, I had not had this type of lag before, I had regular lag that cause FPS drops, but this one is not the same, it just feels juttery when moving the camera and when sims move. It is unfortunately uncomfortable for my eyes as I get nauseaus easily with movements.

I made the txt file but I am not sure how to attach it to the post 😅

@EeveeTinn  Click "Reply" (not "Quick Reply"), click the Browse button below the text field and next to the paper clip icon, browse to your dxdiag, and select it.

@puzzlezaddictThanks for all the suggestions, I already tried all the in-game possibilities before writing the post, so I skipped that one.

Was there something wrong or strange in the dxdiag file? I don't have knowledge in that area really hahah

So I removed again all the mods, and turned off the game bar and mode, and went into game, looked fine. Then I tested it by turning one thing at a time again, and going back in, and...it was also fine. I have no idea what happened and why was it doing that. I started adding back mods one by one to see if it was maybe that (even though I updated them all and removed them before writing the post), and it was once again fine - the only thing is that some mods do increase the loading time and I have few more lags than without mods, which is kinda to be expected (BBB, MCCC, TOOL, UI, small mods like gardening fix).

I then went to test DDLV for the sake of it to see if the lag there is better, and it was. I will still keep an eye on it, as I have no idea what caused this, as I regularly keep my laptop free of junk files and monitor everything so that it is "healthy".

Thank you for the help up to now 🙂

@EeveeTinn  I didn't see anything odd in the dxdiag, certainly nothing that would explain the micro stutters.  I should have said so, but I just moved on to other troubleshooting steps.

As for why this is resolved... who knows.  Sometimes it's possible to at least guess, for example if some app or driver had updated and you hadn't restarted your computer since then, it would be logical to suspect that the restart fixed the issue.  Sometimes even after a restart, something goes slightly wrong, for example I remember one time being unable to open Nvidia Freestyle for no reason at all, which cleared up after a restart.  But sometimes there isn't even a plausible theory.

At any rate, the important thing is that your game is running properly now.  Let me know if you have any more trouble.
