Plumbella 7/15 Video: Sims 5 Fortnite Monetization Model?

Plumbella, a major EA Creator Network sim influencer (who partnered with The Sims on the Pastel Pop Kit), just released a new video essay discussing her thoughts so far on Sims 5 Project Rene.

As she states in the intro of the video, she loves the Sims Franchise and doesn't want this video to come across as her finding ways to be negative. Still, she brings up concerns she has.

Do you share Plumbella's sentiment when it comes to Sims 5 Project Rene? Are you more optimistic, or perhaps more pessimistic?

For me, all EA has to do is combine the best aspects of The Sims 2 with the best aspects of The Sims 3, remove the worst aspects of both the games and wrap it in The Sims 4 art style with a little more detail to meshes and textures. Add in the new custom furniture system and actually deliver smarter sims that they promised for the Sims 4. That's all, and I would love it.

My concern is with the multi-player, multi-platform, and social aspects they want to add and how they might try to monetize the game.
So I will sit on the sidelines and watch how this new installment to The Sims develops. As for right now, I will not buy anymore packs for The Sims 4. I won't even play the game. I will wait until the series is complete and start playing it again and buying the remaining packs when Project Rene launches.

I will not even download the free-to-play base game, because I don't want to be enticed into buying into the game with all the extra content they will offer for sale. Instead I will be playing TS4 and Life By You and watching other simmers play Project Rene/The Sims 5. The base game would have to be really compelling to get me install it at launch. I mean mind-blowing compelling, not great future potential compelling.

Plumbella is really hung up on that IGN article that mentions the Fornite monetization model. Important to remember that doesn't mean that Sims 5 will be like Fortnite - only that the Sims 5 will similarly be a free-to-play/enter game like Fortnite. The F2P model is broad in execution with a whole spectrum of different games.

The Barbara Streisand effect prevails...by declining reporters' requests for comments on the Sims 5 monetization model, The Sims Team and EA have caused the fandom speculation machine to shift into overdrive. In other words, the lack of public statement has ballooned this into an even bigger issue with more eyeballs watching closely.

Yes, the Sims Team really should revisit the code base of the Sims 2 and 3 and directly pull algorithms and systems from it - aspiration meter, Wants & Fears, memory system, open world, etc. Everything needs to be built from the ground up in UE5, but in terms of answering "How should be do this? How should this be implemented?" when these questions arise, the Sims Team needs to respect the past and use what worked!

I haven't played Sims 4 since 2019 and Discover University. I have seriously tried, multiple times, to enjoy the game. How convenient it would be if I did! But I don't.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rene had some sort of battle pass and microtransactions. They've already got plenty of data on microtransactions from The Sims 3 store, The Sims 4 kits, and two different mobile games. All kinds of games have battlepasses now so it wouldn't be impossible for Rene to have one. Just Dance has a battle pass for example. Disney Dreamlight Valley which is in a similar vein has a battle pass. Based on what we've heard of their upcoming game I don't think many currents fans will enjoy it honestly. People keep saying go back to 2, go back to 3. I don't think they want to make something like those at this point. Until developers realize that we don't have enough time to put into 25 different live service games for every battlepass that will be the cash cow everyone chases.

Yes. The whole concept of kits is testing the waters for the future monetization model. Frequent, small purchases on content. They're controversial, but clearly enough people are buying them that it's worth the effort to keep making them.

The question of will be enjoy the monetization model of Sims 5...it depends on what it is. If it's a free base game with the same content architecture (EPs, GPs, and kits) there will be no issue.
