NPC stuck in hospital profession

I had the same problem and the only way I could get rid of that NPC was by starting a new work shift with one of my Sims (not the one trying to level up), completing some tasks with other NPCs and then I quickly canceled the shift. That caused the important Sim to leave the building they were in. In my case, it was the Spa.
