Sims mobile trait upgrade

So two of my Sims have had the 1 star generous trait for a while. I then purchased ‘Poppy’s gold generosity charm which gives the generous trait 3 Stars. Shouldn’t the same 2 Sims now have 3 Stars for...

    It stays 1 Star since they’ve already chosen it. I bought 2 star ambitious but all my sims still have just 1 Star right now.

    Well, was I wrong? They _should_ acquire the upgrades when you buy them, but they _actually_ keep the one star trait. Both are true!
