Don't know why your Big Claw went red after 1 tap. Is it possible that you could have set off your Big Claw without your knowledge by collecting a reward nearby Big Claw (near enough to set him off running outside your line of sight)? Just a guess on my part, based on the evidence provided here.

I'm pretty sure it's only xp, only money, or only pills. I've never seen a combined payout.
