Actully it's an automated deal. You have to have posted 100 messges, then the system will allow you to have an avatar.
I have seen people with only 20 post with avatars and other with over 150 posts without, so I'm absolutely sure the number of total post is completely irrelevant even that it would be a lot more logical and fair system if you got automatically promoted after you have posted a specific number of posts. (That is how promotion works on most forums, but sadly not here)
It is all about being noticed by the forum moderators in the last few dates up to the forum promotion day (22th of the month)
Maybe it would a little to have a unique signature (maybe with a animated gif  ) so the forum moderator's can easier recognize and count your posts
It would be nice if one of the forum moderators would reply to this thread and tell us how it really works.
EA has been surprisingly quiet about how this forum promotion works.
It is seems impossible to find any official information about this.
Our
moderators have
nothing to do with avatar promotions so stop saying it! You make it sound like Neo, Dalton, Deadshot, John C, and Direwolf are all sitting around a table together in some darkened room, diabolically debating who merits a nod and laughing at those who get left out. :P They are no more involved in promotion day than you or me.
As others have said, "the system" (a mysterious EA forum bot) runs through whatever algorithm/code it's been programmed to, which determines who gets the privilege to have their own silly picture beside their silly user name.
It isn't complicated - be active on the 19th, 20th, and 21st and hope for the best. That's it. I guarantee I can make a dummy account on the 19th and have it promoted on the 22nd simply by posting on those key days (if you'd like, I will do it in April to prove the point).
I don't think anybody knows why it is set up like this. It just is. Many forums let you have an avatar straight away or after a certain number of posts, but EA doesn't, for whatever strange reason. As the say in the restaurant industry, "It is was it is."
