Yes, I know many have contributed a lot of money at one time, but there really isn't any good reason except laziness to have to pay for donuts.
Is this game still making any money?
I know EA introduced the XP multiplier, but maybe it was a mistake, maybe it's being exploited, maybe we are digging our own graves.
In my experience with this sort of thing there are always people who will spend real money even when it is possible to just farm in game and get them. For example an MMO: Guild Wars 2. You can buy gems with in game currency. Yet there are tons who are spending real money to buy them to buy the gem store content. I think if we were to look at all sorts of games with optional cash shop content you will find the same.
