I'm at 18,175 bells but only have 4 elves. I'm way ahead of schedule so I won't be worrying. If you're a bit behind, I suggest going to neighbours whom you are able to tap the cannon and elf cave FIRST. That way you get ten bells as opposed to 5. Later on in your rounds, you don't get as many bells. Also, keep doing the tasks that are required as the reward is bells.
