Is taking advantage of in game glitches cheating?

I say no. There are no "rules" for this games therefore cheating can occur. Is it unethical, well that's a different questions, but no I don't think it's unethical either.

With all this talk about cheat codes, I'm waiting for someone to suggest up, up, down, down, left, right..........

left, right, b a b a start. You cant just not finish it.

And sorry maxx for turning the direction of your thread, I thought it was a comparable example that everyone would accept as cheating. I was soooooooo wrong.

Cheating is subjective though and has many different forms. It is also related to "being cheap". For video games it is a different subject, especially if it's a solo-player experience. Their are cheat codes built into some games, other's are achievable by unlocking them (well used to I guess). Obviously if it is against for a multiplayer game it is clearly in the wrong, since some glitches/cheats are incredibly easy to do, requiring no sense of skill to beat players that do have the skill at the game.

When you look at the solo experience it is different. Tapped Out is a more solo experience, so the line is different. Is house farming cheating? You are essentially manipulating the game to increase your cash pay out (same as this stackable handshake). The stackable handshakes just turn out the cash/xp faster than house farming. Either way you are gaining more money/xp then a normal/expected play through. House farming has been around since the dawn of the game. The only way they attempted to combat that was with the decoration limit. They could have put a halt or a limit on the number of houses instead. Yet today we still see many people farming their houses.

They did attempt to combat the stackable glitch. 1) they auto collected all stackables with the Xmas update. 2) they removed the 3.5 day tiles so a majority of players near/at/over the (original) limit was halted. 3) I believe it was reported they also combated the placement of the additional tiles no longer allowing those stored tiles to be placed.

Overall, they still left it as is; as the a real fix could take the game out. We know the game has bugs, it we also don't want more of them.
  • Maybe EA left it alone as a way to collect donuts faster because of all of the complaints of how hard they are to come by.

However, I don't see the relation to house farming. I would not call building extra houses "manipulating the game". The point of the game is to construct buildings, collect the rent, and use it to construct more buildings.

But typically in a game where construction is concerned, there is an aspect of design. House farming done right is having them on streets, with fences, yards, etc. House farming when you cram blue houses using all available space feels like a completely different aspect. It seems to me the goal is to "rebuild Springfield". From watching the show, I've never seen stacks of houses where it is impossible to enter said houses. I wouldn't say that a Springfield was rebuilt when the designer openly placed houses on virtually every available tile of land without adding in yard space, placing them along a street, etc. To me, that sounds like designer is manipulating the collection aspect of the game to achieve additional cash/xp in order to purchase more land - which leads to more houses - and repeats until the designer has maxed out the land and has sufficient cash to buy everything needed. So if the designer is manipulating the cash income from a stackable structure, to me that is apples to apples where in both cases the designer is achieving an increase in cash collection.

Tapping and collecting rent and constructing more buildings is more what you do to play the game. In essence tapping and collecting rent gives cash/xp, same as the open air stage, channel 6, Cletus' farm and Squidport entrance. Whether you tap 10k blue/white houses or handshakes; it still yields cash and xp - to speed up the game. Same with Contra using the 30 life code, you sped up the process of earning lives - to start the game with additional lives - in order to speed up the game (so you don't have to use continues, or worry too much about losing a life here or there).

I'm just saying if you manipulate the game to achieve faster/better/easier results should be the same thing. Using an option of manipulating the game from an expected way is cheating. Whether one person feels it is cheating is subjective (as agreed). With many current games today not really offering in cheat menus or codes, is the way video games have come along. Many older NES, SNES, N64 games had cheat menus, codes, Game Genies, Game Sharks, all ways to manipulate the game and play the game differently than just hitting start. This was before the online era of gaming. Is it cheating to beat a game with infinite lives? Probably. But if you don't have the skill, time, patience and just wish to experience the story without concern, sure you say I had help, used a code, or flat out lie saying you did it without anything. Depends on the person and what they wish to admit, or even their mindset if they feel they outright cheated through the game.
  • Personally I believe that EA know about it for sure... At Christmas we had a quest called ''righteous indignation''. Homer finds a hack, posts said hack on Internet then is upset when it gets patched. Lisa says ' EA will make a fix for it' and 'in fact, they're most probably working on a patch right now' I remember thinking at the time that that was EA's way of showing their hand in typical Simpsons-style humour. I thought that because of all the active threads about it on here at the time that it was obviously a reference to the multi-tapping 'issue'. It just seems such a coincidence that the very next update the issue appears to be fixed. I think it's safe to assume that if they can fix it so that the rose bushes aren't stackable then they can fix it so that nothing is stackable. I guess we'll find out for sure when the update ends and then if things go back to how they was then the answer will be blindingly obvious. :) Back on topic, I don't class it as cheating at all. I also think EA will be inwardly pleased at all the attention SP has been getting for the last few months after becoming stagnant

so if i have a glitch that allows me to get the prize i want from a mystery box if i got a mystery box in a mystery box then that's ok?

I think I know what you're talking about, I've seen someone mention something about it. I've never gotten it to work, though. (Even tried borrowing an idevice and it didn't seem to work.) So yeah, either it is a glitch some people have or I'm doing something wrong when trying to replicate the results.
Seeing as how those boxes are so full of misery, I wouldn't begrudge someone being able to get good stuff once in awhile.

the old one for ios devices has been fixed.

you actually need 2 devices to be able to do it.
its not that often that i get a mystery box in a mystery box and even when i do it takes a lot of patience to be able to get the prize i want.
some people would say its not worth it.
I am pretty sure EA knows about this and they probably don't care because of how much work it actually is and not worth their time to try to fix it.

I have tried this a number of times with a device in each hand but it just results in my receiving the 2nd item in my inventory. So either I am also doing something wrong or thats also been fixed. :(
