Is TSTO Becoming Too Expensive?

I've been playing this game for over five years now, and I've been a premium player for nearly as long. However, I've noticed recently that it's becoming more cost prohibitive than it used to be.

Allow me to explain, earlier in the game's run, it was much cheaper to play. There were premium items, of course, but these were balanced by the freemium items that were available for cash. This was especially true for the level updates, where half the released materials were for cash, and half were for donuts. This was also tied into the periodic Gil deals where donuts were purchasable for a decent discount, or bonus donuts were awarded. I remember a time where I could live off of a Gil donut deal for seven to nine months of gameplay (for the record, it was the $100 deal).

However, it appears that the tide is shifting. More and more of the new content is donut-based, especially the majority of the new characters. Gil deals for exclusive content are more frequent than they used to be, but a donut deal hasn't been a thing for years. I spent $50 on donuts a month or two ago for the international event, but now I'm contemplating another $50 purchase to get the new content during this event.

Now, I'm not one of those "OMG THE GAME IS ENDING" types, but it does appear that the game relies more and more on people purchasing premium content than it used to. Is it just me?
  • For the record: I don't consider myself a completionist (I do, however, purchase all the characters, so there's that), I do donut farm, and I have no problem supporting the game financially. I was just commenting on my perception of how, for me, the game has changed. Consider this: the last character that was purchasable with in-game cash was Wise Guy, from Level 60 last May.
  • Doesn't everything in life become more expensive with time?

That was before they changed the dynamic of the game. Now we get new characters from the events, and instead of in game cash they cost whatever event currency is being used, so essentially its the same thing.
  • IMO, TSTO hasn't gotten any more expensive and never will, because the game is only as expensive as the player chooses to make it. If you used to spend $100 a year on donuts, you can choose to still do the exact same thing although maybe it won't buy you quite as much content as it did in the past. I bet there are plenty of long term players out there who have never spent a cent on the game and are having just as much fun as those of us who have spent money.

  • As mentioned a few times, the game is being balanced on donut farming. Provided you're farming in moderation (I'm not even talking about the house farm guys with 1000% plus multipliers) I personally find you can get way more by spending the same as you always have.

Two years ago I had to make hard choices based on what I wanted vs how much I was wiling to spend a month. Now I spend about the same, but I don't have to make the hard choices, just the easy choices to how much I'm willing to spend to get some of the extras. I don't get everything, but the same amount of money gets me way more than it did a year or two ago. I'm pretty happy with where they are (though you're right, there's way more premium items than there used to be - but many of those premium items are also really easy to pass up).
  • Donuts are way to expensive. $20 for 300 donuts is a complete joke. $20 should give you the ability to buy every premium item for a month instead of 2 character and 2 buildings. $100 should let you buy everything for a year.

I used to spend a lot of money on this game but thankfully I'm played long enough to build a decent multiplier and can farm to my hearts content.

They need to triple the amount of donuts per dollar and I would be more them happy to spend my cash on the game again.

I want the game to continue and I want the game to be financially successful but the only way to support them right now is to literally give them money for nothing (300 donuts is nothing to me). If I could get 900 donuts for $20 my wallet would be open for business again.
