... I keep going looking to fill in T shaped blocks from there. Took the screenshot a little late, meant to show filling in the diagonal as second step (am trigger finger digging over here :D ). 3rd step is the block on the left of the square that's dug out. I repeat that on the 4 other sides if needed until I see one with rocks inside.

Been lucky so far though and can usually find it by the second step.

I do that too, to locate the Ancient Gem as soon as possible.

Once you find a piece of the stone, the gem will be in one of the spots marked with an X.

This is the final one ;) Hard to get clearly as it disappears quick. You'll either have a 4 block T shape or 3 block T shape as in this pic.
