What has helped me get the Nightmares sometimes is letting or forcing my town to fill up with Starspawn until I get the "Your town is overrun" message. Then the Starspawn disappear instead of the Nightmares.
To force your town to fill up with Starspawn (this works for me anyway) go to your neighborhood and start going through your friend's towns. You don't even have to tap anything. You can have already used up your Friend Actions for the day and it still works. After 4 to 6 towns you'll get the "Your town is overrun" message. Go back to your Springfield and wait for a Starspawn to appear (this even works when M'nthster is at the campfire now). Tap the first Starspawn and a minute or so later they'll start wandering into the area.
