Patching requires 84GB of free space

Product: EA SPORTS™ WRC
Platform:Steam-PC
Summarize your bug The entire game is copied to the C:/ drive whenever it's patched.
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Install the game in a secondary Steam library (although it might still do it if it's installed in the primary one, hard for me to test). Install other stuff so the drive that the primary Steam library/installation is on has less than 84GB (the full size of the game) of free space. Patch the game, even with just a 1.1GB download like patch 1.3.
What happens when the bug occurs? The entire game will be copied to the primary Steam library drive (usually "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading") while it's being patched, then it'll be moved over to where it's supposed to be installed once the patch completes. If there isn't enough space on the primary drive, it will fail and start over again.
What do you expect to see? The game should be patched in-place or at least incrementally, like most other games do.

  • @Jezs This is the case for every Unreal engine 4 game. UE4 games (like this one) are stored on disk basically as 1 huge package, so to update the game you need to unpack the entire game, update it, and then repackage the entire game.

Dont ask me why they need to do this, is is just the way it is :D

From what I've read that would only be the case if the developer chooses to package it all into a single .pak file, which this game does not. The largest .pak file is 12GB.

It also seems like the cause of this issue would be on Steam's end, but I assume the developers will contact them in that case.

  • I moved it over to the primary drive before the last patch, and it did patch correctly with only 20GB of free space, so it's only a secondary-drive issue.

  • I've got other games that also have large single files (18GB) installed on the secondary drive through Steam that patch correctly without much free space, so it seems to not be just a Steam patcher issue, it's specific to this game.
