Game crash in menu

I was starting up the firing range but wanted to change my legend before I loaded in. I hover over lifeline; the legend skin/textures don't load in, the game freezes and stutters, after which it seemed to stabilize again. I return to the 'play' screen but then the game shuts down.

Started up the game again, boot up a firing range server and hover over legends while waiting for it to connect - this time I hover over lifeline, maggie and balistic. Again no skins/textures for all 3 legends. The game then freezes again but instead of stabilizing for a bit, it shuts down immediately.

After the second crash I validate the game files which states that all 10k+ files were successfully validated. I play on steam/pc.

An hour before, I was playing on the firing range with maggie no problem, only difference was that in that session I was using mnk as the input, with the crashes I was using a ps4 controller. Both devices were plugged in (& w/o being disconnected at any point) during all three instances.
