Custom controller settings not saving — always reset to "Classic" (FC 26)

Hi everyone,

I’d like to report a recurring issue I’ve been having with controller customization in FC 26 (and also in previous FC titles).
Basically, any custom button layout I create never stays saved — it always resets back to the default “Classic” layout once I start a match.

This happens to me every time I play on a friend’s console, both on PlayStation and Xbox, and regardless of whether I sign in with my own account or as a guest.

Here’s what happens in detail:

I go into the game settings, customize the button layout the way I like, and save it as Custom A.
As soon as I start a match, my controls are automatically set back to “Classic”.
I’ve tried doing this from different menus — the main menu, pre-match settings, the side selection screen before kickoff, and even during the in-game pause menu — but the result is always the same: it resets to “Classic”.
If, during side selection, I manually change the control scheme from Classic to Alternate, it still resets back to Classic once the match starts.
Interestingly, if the console owner (the main profile on that console) uses a Custom A layout, it stays saved correctly for them. But if I try to select the same Custom A layout as a guest or a secondary player, it always goes back to Classic once the match begins.

So basically, it seems like the game doesn’t properly apply or remember custom control schemes for secondary or guest players, even if the layout exists and is selectable in the menus.

This happens:

In all game modes
On both PlayStation and Xbox
Whether I’m logged in with my own account or playing as a guest
And it has been happening not just in FC 26, but also in several previous FC versions.

It’s a bit frustrating because whenever I play locally at a friend’s place, I have to reconfigure my controls before every single match, and they still don’t stay applied.

Hopefully this can be looked into and fixed — it’s been around for years now and really impacts local play sessions.

Thanks!

  • It happens to me too on PC. My settings load correctly, but my friend's don't. My friend changes the settings before the match, but when the match starts, we notice that the settings revert to the classic ones (even the controls). So he's forced to change them every time during the match.

Unfortunately I can't change them. When I exit the settings menu and the game pauses, as soon as I return to the game, everything is reverted to classic.

  • EA can you patch this please, I can’t seem to play I have the same issue! I create a custom controls layout, save it, return to my seasons match, and it just doesn’t save. I’ve lost 3 games now because I had to quit due to wrong controls

  • What controllers do you all use?
I use cyclone 2 and it seems to happens in between scene changes while in online game or during menu changes its hangs the controller completely not even hardware tester detects the gamepad. The game is soft locking and changing controller layout itself. wtf Im still on 24hr refund and Im edging to do it because this is beyond belief how a company wont even test their own software. Also manager mode all my team players have black boots on? Half of what we pay for is for the license and realism and they even find a way to botch that. What a **bleep**show.

FKN modders do a better job than these Canadian turds who call themselves game coders.

  •  it's a workaround for kick off mode and career mode on console,i play on xbox series s

doesn't fix linkup issue on 2nd controller at kick off but it remains custom A at 2nd controller

for 2 controllers you need 2 accounts and 2 ea accounts(if you have 4 controllers you need 4 accounts and 4 ea accounts)

you already have set your main account, log off

    enter on your 2nd/new account,add a different ea account,at settings-customise controls make your custom A layout,save profile,exit game

log in your main account with 1st controller, enter in fc26,remain at main menu

now with 2nd controller go at settings ->profile,you must select controller 2 and link the 2nd account to it(main account remains controller 1 and active profile)

still with 2nd controller go from profile to settings-customise controls to create again your custom A layout and save it(not as temporary)

go back at main menu with 2nd controller

now with 1st controller go at kick off or career mode

    ---------------------

in case you do gamesharing it's different with secondary accounts for one user

2 xbox consoles, you bought fc26 and you do gamesharing with your brother

your account must be set as xbox home on brother's console and his account set as xbox home on your console

after you can delete your account from brother's console so he doesn't enter by mistake on your account, you delete your brother account from your console so you don't enter by mistake on his account....accounts remain set as home despite you delete them

on your brother console any secondary account will work fc26,upper method will work at him

on your console fc26 will work only on your main account,so you must do extra steps on your secondary accounts

    extra steps are(i'm a xbox user) :

log off from main account, delete fc26

log on secondary account,go to xbox store and buy fc26 showcase because it's free version

    download fc26 showcase,enter in game,link a different ea account,make your settings,exit game,delete fc26 showcase

install full fc26 game and then do the upper method

edit: i played sunday fc26 career mode with my nephew and both used locked player,i couldn't made custom A for 2nd controller

today i made a little effort and succeded it
