[PS5] Analog Sprint seems to have no effect while in possession of the ball

Platform: PlayStation 5

Controller: DualSense, default control preset, no custom button mapping, Trigger Effects off

Setting: Analog Sprint = ON (Game Settings > Gameplay > Controller Preferences)

Game mode: Ultimate Team, Online Seasons and Online Friendlies. It happens in all of them.

Frequency: every match, constantly

SUMMARY

In FC 26, Analog Sprint gave me real control over how fast my player carried the ball. Holding R2 lightly, somewhere around 20 to 50 percent, produced a controlled run: quicker than a jog, ball close to the feet, free to change direction at any moment. Pressing R2 all the way was a separate and deliberate choice, with longer touches and less control. That difference was a skill, and it took years to learn.

In FC 27, with the same setting turned ON, that difference is gone. No matter how lightly I press R2, the player behaves as if I were holding the trigger all the way down. In practice the setting behaves as if it were OFF.

WHAT I OBSERVE

Two things happen together, and I want to be honest that I cannot say with certainty which one is the cause. What follows is an impression formed over many matches, not a frame by frame measurement.

First, running speed. Once I have the ball, the player seems to be at or very near maximum speed at any trigger pressure. Light pressure and full pressure look and feel the same to me in a match.

Second, touch length. The ball is pushed much further ahead of the player than it was in FC 26. Even at light pressure the touches are long, so the player ends up chasing the ball instead of carrying it.

I would ask the team to check both, because they lead to different conclusions. If only the second one has changed, that could be the new, heavier touch model of FC 27. But if the first one is also true, and carry speed no longer responds to trigger pressure at all, then the setting is simply not being applied while in possession, and that would be a bug.

WHAT I EXPECT

Partial trigger pressure should produce a slower, controlled carry with shorter touches. Full pressure should produce a full sprint with longer touches. Exactly as it worked in FC 26 and in the titles before it.

IF THIS IS INTENDED RATHER THAN A BUG

Then I would ask the team to reconsider, for three reasons.

First, it removes one of the very few genuinely manual, analog skills left in this game. Almost everything else we do is digital: one button, one outcome. Trigger pressure was the one input with real nuance, where the gap between a good player and an average one came from feel rather than from memorised inputs. Taking it away flattens the skill gap in the wrong direction.

Second, it is less realistic, not more. In real football a player carries the ball at whatever speed he chooses, and the best ball carriers constantly modulate between a jog and a sprint while keeping the ball under control. A system where the ball is always knocked far ahead the moment you touch the sprint trigger is further from the real sport than what we had last year.

Third, Controlled Sprint on R1 is not an equivalent replacement. It is one fixed speed. It is a useful tool and I do use it, but it cannot be the only answer, because it replaces a continuous range with a single preset. Trading a continuous analog input for one more button is a step backwards of about ten years.

I am not asking you to undo the heavier, more physical touch model of FC 27. I understand the direction and I can live with it as a baseline. I am asking that Analog Sprint be restored to its full function inside that model, so that trigger pressure once again controls both carry speed and touch length.

REQUEST

Could someone from the team confirm whether this is a bug or working as intended? And if other players have noticed the same thing since launch, please reply here, it would help establish how widespread this is.

Thank you.

I am also getting the heavy-touch/slow-chase behaviour on PS5 in most games, and it is ruining the game for me. This only started within the last week. R2 registers on the input overlay, but my player knocks the ball forward as if I had flicked the right stick and then does not accelerate properly after it. I have tried two controllers and both behave the same. Restarting the game helped temporarily, but it came back. I have a video clip available. I cannot confirm that the trigger-response cause is identical to this report, but the symptoms described here are very familiar. Please investigate and let us know if there is a reliable workaround.

Update, with one new piece of information that I think narrows this down.

A player on PC, Viscenzxo, opened a separate report titled "Analog sprint trigger linear curve" describing the same behaviour in almost the same words: with Analog Sprint ON the trigger response curve is no longer linear or incremental, and any press past roughly 15 percent already triggers maximum acceleration animations and heavy touches, which makes feathering the trigger impossible. He asks for the trigger sensitivity curve to be recalibrated to match FC 26's response depth.

That is PC, with a different controller. Mine is PS5 with a standard DualSense, and my threshold is around 20 to 25 percent. A third report, by MemberFC26, lists PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Pvt_GosIing, who posted the Input Overlay clip here, is on a standard PS5.

So this is not specific to one platform, one controller model, or one player's hardware. That leaves the trigger response curve in the game itself.

I have left a comment on both of the other reports pointing people back here, as EA_FieryHelios asked on the Steam forum, so that the observations end up in one place.

For completeness: the behaviour is still present after title updates 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.0.3 and 1.0.4. Analog sprint is not mentioned in any of their notes, nor in the gameplay developer launch update of 30 September, and 1.0.4 states explicitly that it contains no gameplay or balance changes.

Could someone confirm whether the FC team has had a chance to look at this yet? Twenty-four days in, the question is still open.

Thanks for the reply Mako, I am also having this same issue and will try to upload an example of what you’re looking for. This clip was with analog sprint “On” in settings. As someone who used analog sprinting every game last year, here is what I have noticed: The speed of your run seems maybe slightly affected by analog sprint but your touch on the ball remains as heavy as the full sprint. In my clip I tried to show a full sprint from left to right, and minimal trigger press when traveling from right to left. I don’t have evidence of how it was last year with the input overlay on, but I can assure the touches were nowhere near as heavy. I used Vini JR in this clip who has high dribbling stats to show that this is not an attribute issue. I am on a standard PS5. If you need me to try and gather more data please let me know. And while you are at it can you tell them to make end to end camera face the attacking direction always please? Thanks

The input overlay does not show how far you press the trigger, only that you press it.

I am having exactly the same problem with analog sprint as written above. Just make it as it was in FC 26. Play the game for yourself and compare and try it out. You will notice a huge difference, basically slightly pressing the R2 button gives full sprint in FC 27, the analog sprint does not work properly.

    Hey folks,

Thanks for the added details with this one.

If you're still seeing this on a regular basis, could you try to grab a short video/clip of this happening during a game while the Input Overlay is enabled? That would give us a bit more direct information to be able to pass along to have this checked into further.

This should be available under Settings > Game Settings > Visual > Input Overlay. Thanks!

UPDATE, with a more precise description of the problem.

Another player who used Analog Sprint heavily in FC 26 has now described this independently, and his description is sharper than mine, so I want to correct my own report.

The sprint speed does still vary with trigger pressure. That part appears to be working.

What does not vary is the touch length. At any trigger pressure the ball is pushed ahead as if the trigger were fully held. So the player moves at a controlled pace while the ball travels a full sprint distance, and the carry becomes unusable: you end up chasing your own touch at a jog.

That should make this much easier to check than my original post suggested. Speed curve: working. Touch length as a function of trigger pressure: appears to be locked at maximum.

He also says this was not the case in the beta, where it behaved like FC 26. Separately, an esports coach who had published an Analog Sprint tutorial for FC 27 told me the released game is noticeably different from the beta. That points at a change between the beta build and the release build.

One more lead worth checking: a player on PS5 Pro reports that touch length does vary correctly for him. It may be worth verifying whether the behaviour differs between PS5 and PS5 Pro.

Could someone from the team look at the touch length calculation for partial trigger input while in possession of the ball?

  • I play with a analog sprint off, but i try Also analog sprint in, dame bug,... This bug happens Also on eafc25 and 26 so i think there is a bug in the personal ea account.

Please fix it it s unplayable!!!

Thanks for the bump. A vote on the post itself would help even more, this section ranks by votes and we are still at one.

Small update for anyone landing here. Since posting this I asked a few creators about it and the answers do not agree. An esports coach who had published an analog sprint tutorial for FC 27 replied that, unfortunately, you may as well turn the setting off now, and that the released game is noticeably different from the beta. Another well known creator says it still works exactly as intended. That split is precisely why an official answer would help.

If you play with Analog Sprint ON and you have noticed the same thing since launch, please say so here. The more of us there are, the easier it is for the team to take a look.
