Artistic Prodigy: Sims don't play with task long enough to fulfill task

Trying to complete Artistic Prodigy (Daydreamer) Child Aspiration, but the Child Sim plays with the toy for a few seconds and then returns the toy to talk to another Sim. I tried it a second time, and the Sim did the same thing.

First time the other Sim, who was a Nanny Sim hired to look after a newborn Sim was on the other side of the house when the Child Sim ran over to talk to the Nanny rather than continue playing with the toy. The second time they were in the same room, which shouldn't have stopped the child from playing with the toy.

I bought a variety of toys for the Sim to play with the 3 toys required for the Aspiration. But just like the toys from the toybox, the Child would take out the toy I clicked on in the Inventory, play with it for a few seconds, and then put away the toy into the toybox and start talking to the Nanny again.

It was too short a time for it to count for the 3 toys played requirement.

I used to be able to queue up 3 play-with-toy or play-with-emotions interactions by moving the toys to the kid's inventory first, and it would work. Now it doesn't, but even if I do get them to play longer with that toy later, it doesn't count. It is almost like the first time counts for the object, but not for the aspiration.

As Karfunkel said, the large stuffed animals and dollhouse usually still work, so I sometimes just start placing additional stuffed animals.
