I had the same issue with my sim's daycare. The 2nd floor was their apartment but the customers would go upstairs to their apartment to leave instead of using the front or backdoor. They would just disappear while walking thru the livingroom.
Ah the old leave-by-the-fireplace bug (assuming there was one there for you lol)
