can't release item

i have been trying to move a desk from one area of a room to another and when I try to place it it wont stay. i have to go to the arrow on the top of the screen to put it back where it was. every time I try it on whatever I want to move won't move. i  have tried exiting the game and going back into it and it still dont work. also I have tried placing items like garbage cans on my farms and when I place them they disappear.
