My cat also got void black, I solved it by removing all the paint mode edits and now my cat looks fine but of course have no moon or stars on them anymore. It sucks that paint mode is completely broken right now.
I think you will find that if you saved then exit and restart the game you cat will be back to the black shading/lighting less texture.
