I did a disk cleanup and tinkered around with the graphics settings both in-game and on my PC, no change. I'm going to hold off on the clean boot, I'm just too anxious about not doing it right and messing up my PC. I only have one save where I play with these animals and with the glitch now only occurring on the first interaction it doesn't seem quite as bad.
It's happened to me in the past that weird little glitches like this resolve themselves with the next patch and I would guess they'll be patching the game again soon, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed for that.
