This one's so weird. My sims just started doing this, and it was a hot day.
Mine did too so I got a sim to take a photo of the flame, then had them paint the photo. I then placed the fake fireplace and put the painting on the wall behind it. To hide the flame in the summer, I put a short curtain over it.
LOL that is a creative solution. I love it.
