[GTW] Retails: Sims don't buy anything from Displays (Store actively run)

Date: 03-03-2025 (D-M-Y)

Hour: 18:30-19:30 CET

Device: Windows 11 computer

Launching app: Steam and EA

Problem:

When I play with my sims in her bakery, the clients don´t show the selling bar on top of their head. The bar shows up for a split moment after interacting about commercial sales with the costumers and dissapear right after. They never really make a sale no matter how much I talk to them. I tried for 3 in game days.

The only way I made a sale was through the following: by clicking on "close a sale" several times on the same costumer.

Options I tried to solve it:

First I turned off my mods and reboot the game. I played for the second day. Nothing changed.

Then I turned off my computer and made sure steam, ea and the sims 4 were updated. Still didn´t work for the third day in game.

My conclusions:

It seems it was a bug from the latest update of the Sims 4 for the upcoming pack.

Proof:

I have a 1:37 minute video showing how its behaving in game. I wish I knew how to attach it here.

In the image attached I am showing my sim at her bakery commercially interacting with the costumer as well as the employe. But none of the clients have the selling bar on top of their head.

  • I have this problem too. The shop is set as public zoning, browse and buy is set as a business activity, the displays all say that sales are active, and yet when Sims show up they can come in but they don't even look at the items, they just stand around talking or dancing to the stereo. I've tried removing all mods from the mods folder, removing the cache file and repairing the game and nothing has fixed it. It looks like my Sim is going to have to go back to selling things off a stall.

Edit: I discovered in the end that objects need to be placed for sale by using the 'stock surface' interaction on the display, not by dragging them onto it. And if Sims are ignoring an object for sale, removing it with the 'take items from surface' interaction and then replacing it usually gets customers paying attention to it again.

  • Also having problems with the Lice Cold Retail Freezer not working on my Small Business home lot. It seems the game registers it as a regular refrigerator and not a spot for selling.

The only store items that seem to work for selling food and produce are the Display Cases, but they take up a lot of space and don't hold as many items.

  • I am also having this problem in my bakery.  I do not use mods of any kind.  I tried demolishing the lot several times, placed a Maxis curated bakery on a new lot, moved the bakery items to tables instead of placing them in the display cases (which allowed me to make only one sale one time - placing baked goods on the table didn't work anymore after that single sale).  I placed different types of bakeries.  Nothing is working to make clients buy anything, even after multiple Retail interactions.  I am playing on Mac OS with nearly all expansions packs installed, including Enchanted.  Not sure whick pack introduced the bug.  I have all packs except for Eco Lifestyle.

  • Currently having this issue with a bakery I downloaded from Maxis.

I have an empty display table so will try to remove it and see if that will help any.

  • I am facing the same issue, I do not have any mods, just tried fixing the game with resetsim because even my employees are only chatting in the retail lot. Saw this posting in Mar 2025, did they do anything already? its so annoying

  • I just came across the same issue last night. After working hard to save up enough money for my sim to purchase a retail shop to run as a bakery it refused to work. I could mark items for sale but the tags were pure white (no $ symbol or price listed) and while customers came in they only stood around and talked, no one tried to buy anything. My sim and his husband were actively running the business and while they had some retail conversation options there was nothing available to "close the deal", etc. I let it run for hours without a single sale. Many of the goods were excellent quality and I had no mark-up on the items.

I do play with mods but I took them all out and cleared my cache with no change to the behavior.

I have played a little bit with retail stores years ago so I had a high level idea how it should work and I knew this wasn't right, then I found this bug report.

This is very disappointing. I had a whole life plan for this sim where he was supposed to work his way up from a Home Chef Hustle bakery cart to a real brick and mortar store and now that won't be possible unless I re-enable Businesses and Hobbies which was not the plan (I wanted to revisit the GTW retail system as part of my deep dive into the aspects of GTW that I hadn't done much with).

Oh my gosh thank you! I have been searching like crazy trying to figure out what was happening and this must be it. Deleting all the displays and putting stuff on the ground worked for me!

Sims will now buy things which are "set for sale" on display shelves from retail stores.
