I bring good news for those on PC/Mac and not opposed to mods. A talented and kindly user by the name of CiwayW on Curseforge has reversed the awful UI mess and put it back to the original form and apparently set it up so that multiple teen households can do their own tasks!
Cautiously testing so far, and works as it should. No conflicts with my other school mods either, so keeping this little gem on my game for now. May CiwayW never run out of simoleons or burn their grilled cheese.
Just search for High School Event Tasks Fix on CurseForge and you should be set! Sorry to console players, looks like you're stuck with the new mess for now.
I think this will be the first mod I will use. I cannot stand this mess EA created.

At least this time there is a workaround, so that's something I suppose. Though it still is kinda a joke and reminds me of how badly broken Bethesda games can be and how it's up the modders to fix it.
