A ghost was annoying the office, was told to get rid of it, found the floating object, used the interaction, it stopped floating, the ghost appeared, went down the stairs, faded out of view and that was it. The ghost removal didn't get checked off, the interaction on the previous floating object was still present.

- Are you using mods/cc in your game ? Please remove them and test without them if you do.
I am, but nothing that deals at all with ghosts. The second time it happened, the ghost got out of the item, but just acted normal, not sure what you're supposed to do after it is out, or if it is just supposed to vanish/leave? Can you explain what exactly should happen when you activate the floating object?
Please follow these steps to test your game on vanilla game with no mods/cc
haven't played the career so I would need to test hit myself (currently don't have the time, maybe someone else can answer this).
The tasks should def tick off.
I ran into it a second time, I didn't save at that point, so I couldn't try without mods, but the ghost just came out of the item and nothing happened afterwards. Though I am seeing ghost reaper staff and no, zero ghost mods. When it comes up again, I'll save and try it without mods, see if it ticks off, then track down which one is interfering with it (if I any). If it fails to tick off, then clearly there is something amis.
JUST got the job notice that the ghost and other things was around.
It was not in the small books, but the bookshelf. Climbing the stairs I saw a ghost queued, from what I remember that happened after activating the books, but this time it happened before I got to activating the bookshelf. The sim reaped the ghost and it worked. So it looks like the ghost "scare" (I'm guessing) can interrupt the reap section of that.
Okay, reloaded the same modded save, the reaping worked again. The ghost "scare" showed up and stopped the sim from getting the ghost out of the bookshelf, but it did reap it the same way again, so I'm not entirely sure what happened with the standalone books on the upper floor, but perhaps something else was causing the sim to not complete the reap section, as something caused it to "X" out.
Third try of the same save, I tried to X out of it after the ghost was evicted from the bookshelf and it did, but right atop it was "Scared by ghost", so quite possible the ghost scared the sim mid-activation, because it did "X" out of it the original 2 times it didn't work from the standalone books (near the stair exit upstairs). Perhaps as a means of "fixing this", have an extra activation on that ghost that lets you finish the situation (and maybe make it run around causing havoc).
Didn't think Reapers could be scared by ghosts?
I can try an unmodded save of it, but with it completing 2 times in a row and me canceling it so it wouldn't on the third, means that the first 2 were getting cancelled externally, so probably better to have an extra interaction to chase after the ghost if it "got loose again".
Side note, the one I cancelled, had to wait for the ghost to pick another spot, then it worked.
And I forgot to mention, vampires are "dropping by" the office, just vampires, nobody else. Bella Goth was the first to do that.

sounds a bit expected though that it didn't tick off if the action didn't go through and didn't really complete. Not sure if this is a bug.

You mean the reaper's headquarter ? In connection with this or as a separate issue ?
Well, it has a partial bug, the ghost was "out of the item", but the item still had the action on it, so if it moved into another one, I wasn't sure if it did or not, as it went down stairs and I couldn't find it.
And the side note, was in the Reaper's headquarters (following to work), yes, vampires did visit, walked right in and sat down talking to the other employees. I didn't know if that was expected or not.
