I have the same problem: in a large family, the character icons overlap each other, the connections become one big tangled mess, and everything has turned into a mess.
It seems the developers underestimated the size of the families in our saves. Trying to display the entire tree with all the relatives at once in one window is a very strange idea.
I would recommend they look at how it's done on MyHeritage and other family tree services, where different parts of the tree can be collapsed and expanded, and the depth of generations and relationships can be adjusted.
Incidentally, navigating a large tree in a small window is also inconvenient.
I wish both old family tree and new family tree can be provided. That would make things a lot more convenient
