Problems since latest update today

Two problems have arisen since I installed the latest update today:

  1. My sims can only order books that they already own.  This is true whether I go through their bookcases or their computer.
  2. The game doesn't recognize the upgrade parts my sim has in his inventory and is refusing to let him upgrade anything because he "doesn't have the parts," even though he does.

I'm playing on Mac, if that makes a difference!  I have some expansion packs but no mods or cc.
