The problem seems to be with my Sim who has high handiness (lvl 9). He only gets the option "expert repair." His wife got the option "restore" and that worked. The refrigerator has not disappeared, and my Sims can cook from it.

Do other items disappear too ?

So far, no other item has disappeared. And my level 9 Handiness Sim was able to perform an expert repair on the microwave from the kit and have that restore it.
