Because you said they were black for you before the patch. Please read my edit.
This is only for pets that got black after the patch that fixed it.
Please do understand that some threads are kind of confusing to us and get kind of lost sometimes, but you moved my posts in a lucked thread "Blacked out pets/werewolves" - Even though the issue still exists after the hot"fix" patch, the thread is lucked. Cade's suggestions do not work. All saves are affected and ruined by this catastrophic bug. Only those who have a backup like me are may able to restore their broken pets and horses.. I'm not even sure if using my backup save files will stay untouched by the bug because I'm affraid to reload my game to test any further.
Issues can be very confusing to me too but the problem is that Maxis can do nothing to restore those textures. They are lost. I'm not exactly sure where tattoos/paint mode stuff gets saved but take the example of the black photos which is essentially the same: The game saves the picture (aka texture) as a separate entry in the save file and then associates the actual picture with the texture. If said texture doesn't get saved or delete for some reason, it's no longer in the save and hence can't be restored.
I do understand that this is less then ideal but there's nothing that can be done about that. The thread was locked as it's not an issue Maxis can or will look into further.
If it's newly happening for with this patch, then they need to check it out again, hence this thread.

If you're backup saves are affected, you are welcome to post here again. Do make further backups to prevent this.
I'm personally also very positive that this issue will come back somewhere down the line cause there's almost always been a thread since the first added paint mode. There's just different causes why the textures get lost and they need to be fixed individually.
So: Save your paint mode Sims/Pets to the gallery and keep backups. That's the best advice.
