Having the same problem. Wanted to try out scenarios, picked "Stuck in their shadow". Fulfilled the first level of her aspirations and afterwards enlisted her in tech guru job. Was instantly lvl 4 (Ace Engineer) and after first day at work (Work hard to increase work performance) she got instantly promoted to lvl 7 (Pick your branch)
