Update/Downloads/EA app is in loop hell

Hello.

I just made the switch from Origin to the EA app.  I was planning on uninstalling my game and reinstalling it on a new external drive. I started following a tutorial on how to do this and I had copied over my Sims 4 folder in the new drive (for backup just in case), and then lost my internet connection.  I reopened the EA app and was going to click on the option to uninstall, but there was no longer an option to uninstall and the tutorial stated I needed to do this.  Well, I figured that I would just install the game again.  However, it wouldn't install.  I went in an out of the EA app because it was very glitchy.  Eventually it installed and began installing the add-ons.  I kept getting the "something went wrong" while trying to download the add-ons.  I deleted the Sims folder that I copied into the new drive.  Then I tried to update the Sims 4 and nothing but crickets.  No messages nothing.  I decided I was tired and turned everything off.  I tried again the afternoon and when I opened EA was prompted to install the game again.  Did that, and still the add-ons won't install, nor can I update the base game.  I tried to open a new case on EA help but that isn't working either.  I'm stuck in LOOP hell and can't install my game and all the add-ons nor can I get help.   All I want to do is move my game from the C: drive to the new additional drive so I can make space on my PC and since customer service is dead, I have a game that I can't play.  All of this started when I had to migrate to the EA app from Origin.

  • @amywelte  For the base game, if you reinstalled, your game should be fully updated.  Is there anything you see that suggests it's not?

For your missing packs, do you have the CAS Demo installed?  If so, please see this thread:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-PC/EA-App-claims-packs-are-installed-yet-they-are-not/td-p/12126024

Otherwise, please run searches for two or three of your missing packs.  Open a File Explorer window, click This PC in the left panel, and enter the folder name for one of the missing packs in the search field in the upper-right corner.  This is the full list of packs:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/extras-2/available-packs-dlc/

For example, if you're looking for Seasons, you'd search for EP05 .  Wait for the search to finish, then make sure the full file path is showing under each result.  If it's not, expand the window sideways as necessary.  Take a screenshot using Windows key-shift-S and attach it to a reply here.  Then repeat for one or two more packs.

Thank you for your response.  The issue for downloading to the new drive finally worked.  I'm not sure I am out of the woods yet though.  I currently have an EA folder on the C: drive that all the folders are empty (see pic).  I also have a backup on the Desktop which has the same folders on the C drive but are NOT empty.  This is my game data yes?  The saves and all the good stuff I need.  I reinstalled the Sims 4 and all of the packs onto the D: drive (see pic) and I would like to now get my backup data from my desktop to the D: drive.  How do I do that?  Thank you so much for any help you can provide.  EA unfortunately was supposed to get back to me and it's been a week now. I would love to just start playing my games again.

@amywelte  Sims 4 will always look for the user folder in Documents > Electronic Arts, and if no Sims 4 folder exists there, the game will create a new one with no content, which is what you're seeing now.  If you want the game to read user data from D, you'll need to create a symbolic link:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2020/02/moving-windows-documents-folder-to-external-drive-via-symbolic-link.html

In your case, you can copy the Sims 4 folder on your desktop (third screenshot) to the external drive rather than moving the empty one (first screenshot).  I'd suggest copying rather than moving for now so you keep the backup in place.

Additionally, you'll need to create a separate folder on D into which your user data will go.  You really don't want it combining with the game's program files (second screenshot), as that will introduce all sorts of potential errors and make troubleshooing significantly more complicated.  Then point the symlink to that folder, e.g. "D:\User Data\The Sims 4" rather than "D:\The Sims 4" in the second half of the command.

@puzzlezaddict unfortunately the symbolic link did not work for me.  It said that it didn't recognize the path.  I tried it several times, but nothing.  It seems that I am in some kind of loop that I created that I can't really get out of.  This all started when I was prompted to replace Origin with the EA app.  I began the process of uninstalling and then it went haywire and I've been stuck ever since.  I contacted EA and eventually spoke with someone who elevated the ticket, but they haven't contacted me and it's been a week.  I'll never get the help I need from them.  I went ahead and uninstalled the game from the D: drive, uninstalled the EA app, and made sure that I uninstalled/deleted everything Sims/EA from the C: drive.  The only Sims stuff I have is the user data that's sitting on my desktop.  The EA app gives the option of downloading the game directly to the D: drive which is what I did but the screenshots I sent you are what I ended up with including info on the C: drive.  So, I don't know what to do next. ☹️  I have nothing except the one folder.  I appreciate your assistance and if you don't want to continue to help, I completely understand.  If I have to, I will just start the game over with no saved data.  Thank you!
