Game started crashing to desktop with advanced rendering enabled

@TylerHowell17  Try reinstalling DirectX 9, which Sims 3 uses.  You don't need to reinstall anything; just download the installer from Microsoft and run it.  Restart your computer afterwards.

(And yes, it's compatible with Windows 10, even though it doesn't say so.)

If that doesn't help, please remove options.ini from Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3.  The game will create a new file with default options.  Load it to the Main Menu, change the graphics options you want, quit to desktop, launch the game, and see whether it works.

If you still get a crash, please move the entire Sims 3 folder out of Documents\Electronic Arts and onto your desktop and test.  Again, change the settings at the Main Menu and quit to desktop before loading a new save.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you for the suggestions! I'm trying to reinstall DirectX 9 through the link you provided, but as it installs it asks me where to extract the files to and I'm not sure where to direct it to

@puzzlezaddict I managed to figure the DirectX 9 installation out (forgot that google existed haha) and it worked on a new save for a few sim days before the game crashed again. I tried your other two suggestions, and a new save seemed to work all through CAS and moving the sim into the world, but none of my old saves will load without crashing either straight away or a day or so into gameplay. I guess something broke them? Not too sure. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it!

@TylerHowell17  The fact that your new save works fine, and some of your old saves do too, strongly suggests that the issue is your saves or some other game content, not your system, so that's good.

Have you tried loading one of your existing saves in the clean Sims 3 folder yet?  That would be my next suggestion: copy over a save, but don't add anything else to the clean folder.  Since you'll be testing a copy of the save, with the original still intact in the old user folder, you don't need to worry about the effects of missing mods or cc.

Please also let me know which mods you use (just a list, no links).  If there are any adult-themed mods, you can just name their creator instead, to keep within this site's rules about discussing content that raises the game's rating.  The reason I ask is because some mods can do permanent damage to a save.

@puzzlezaddict yeah I tried that and unfortunately, it did still crash, but a brand new save (so far) hasn't after a day of gameplay. I removed all of my CC (which was just a handful of hairs) a few days ago (but I kept my default skin replacement as removing it didn't seem to make a difference). I do still use some NRaas mods:

@TylerHowell17  Do you get any scripterrors to go along with the crashes?  They'd be in the Sims 3 folder in Documents\Electronic Arts.  If you do, the people at NRaas would be much better equipped to interpret them and let you know what looks broken; I have only a rudimentary ability to read them.

What I would suggest though, if you can get an older save loaded for at least a little while, is to run an MC town reset.  Then use "save as" to rename the save (so you keep the original as a backup), quit, delete the cache files, reload, and see how things go.  For reference, the cache files are:

• CASPartCache.package
• compositorCache.package
• scriptCache.package
• simCompositorCache.package
• socialCache.package

Save often, pay attention to what's happening in-game.  If you get another crash, I'd like to know what was on-screen, what time of sim-day it was, etc.  This is especially relevant if you can duplicate the crashes under some particular set of circumstances.

@puzzlezaddict I tried my best to get an older save to load, but I couldn't even get past the loading screen without a crash. I managed to play a new save for about 5 days in-game before it crashed - it was around 4pm on a Friday, and my sim was at work (Film career). I was on the map view looking for a sim I needed to speak to for an opportunity when the screen froze and then the game crashed to the desktop. I checked the script error file in my sims 3 folder and it mentioned the FPS limiter file in the /bin folder I've been using, so I removed it, deleted the cache files, and tried to load an old save but it still crashed (this time without a script error) so I'm not sure if that actually was the issue, but I've not put it back in just in case. I guess I'll just have to play without advanced rendering enabled, even if it does bug me. Thank you for your help the last few days, I really appreciate it!
