Yeah I agree. It seems to me (and I am just generalizing based on my experience here) that the matchmaking for casual mode roughly uses 3 types of lobbies:
- New player lobbies queuing solo
for ALL very new accounts and ALL very very bad players (if you get one 10+ kills match, you pretty much are out of that queue) - Normal lobby
for MOST solo queuing players of all skills, A FEW premade trios of all skills and MOST or maybe HALF premade duo + one random squads of all skills - Hot lobby
for MOST premade trios of all skills, A FEW solo players that over-performs and A FEW or maybe HALF premade duo + one random squad, especially those that over-performs
Based on the very short matchmaking queue times of like 2-5 seconds, seemingly for all players regardless of skill level, it seems to me that this model is far more likely to be true than some sort of hard SBMM or EOMM based on the queueing players skills, win rate etc
- New player lobbies queuing solo
- @Midnight9746 that's simply not true at all, even the devs have said multipul times that the game got SBMM and absolutely no sigts of EOMM, games that are using EOMM is games like Fifa and Madden
- @biast12 They say it uses SBMM, but insists on giving me two players who got no game sense, aiming abilities, let alone teamwork knowledge, VS full stack preds or high ranked teams.
That just tells me its not using what is being claimed. - @biast12 Just because they say it, doesn't mean it's true.
Would you like me to share my stats, and then you can tell me how they match Master/Pred players with 4k/20-bombs?
Here's my trios stats:
K/D #1: 0.07 with 10 average damage per match
K/D #2: 0.14 with 90 average damage per match
K/D #3: 0.50 with what used to be 300 average damage per match, but is now 25 with Season 12.
So, go ahead and explain to me how WE as a trio are equal to Master/Predator players with their 4k/20-bombs. Go ahead. Tell me how my skill is EQUAL OR SIMILAR to them. - Balladalidila4 years agoSeasoned Ace

Just wanna weigh in on the EOMM discussion =)The rumor about Respawn using EOMM in Apex originated from an article at Dexerto called "Apex Legends SBMM controversy: Is EA rigging your matches? - Dexerto". But if you read this article, all they base this speculation on is that EA (so not even Respawn who is developing Apex) conducted a research study on a new approach of matchmaking which they called EOMM that tried to match "optimal match opponent" based on how the outcome of a match affects player retention. In the report, they compared this EOMM to conventional matchmaking methods like SBMM, Random matchmaking etc and came to the conclusion that EOMM was better at retaining players.
But here is the thing; the study (WWW17Chen_EOMM (ucla.edu)) was specifically conducted on "an EA 1v1 PvP game" with three possible match outcomes; win, draw, loss (so probably FIFA if I had to guess). They explicitly pointed this out many times in the study. In the conclusion, they argued that the results could be used for team games but clearly was talking about team 1 vs team 2 - type of games like CSGO, Valorant, Overwatch etc where they also explicitly stated that it would require a lot of development of the study findings to be able to apply it to team games.I don't think expect anyone to read and try to understand the research paper but trust me; there is just no way that the findings of that study is even remotely applicable for a game with 60 players in each match, divided into 20 teams of 3. Only the fact that the methods --> results of the study was based on a game with three definite match outcomes (win, lose, draw) SHOULD debunk any speculations that EOMM is applicable in Apex..
So I totally agree with @biast12. if EA uses EOMM, its in games like FIFA and Madden. But that doesn't mean the current matchmaking has elements what you could classify as "engagement optimizing". Ofc will game designers try to find ways to make people wanna keep grinding their game. Respawn employees even confirmed this in a tweet which can be seen in the Dexerto article. I think the soft resets in ranked is one such example. Another is that full premade trios now and then gets to play in lobbies with most squads of randoms. But to call these examples EOMM is wrong since this refers to a certain method of matchmaking, derived from theoretical formulas and empirical studies.
No offense to anyone but I think this EOMM rumor is a prime example how missinformation grows and spreads like cancer. It starts out with mere speculations and after a while "on the internet", it becomes the truth, even though NO new information or proof has been added to the discussion.
- @Balladalidila I don't believe it has EOMM. If it did, it would hand me and my terrible (at the game) friends wins all of the time. That would keep us engaged.
However, it ABSOLUTELY does NOT have SBMM. I invite anyone to come play with me. I will PROVE through my BAD GAMEPLAY that I am NOT a Diamond+ player. - Balladalidila4 years agoSeasoned Ace
And I agree with that. My take on the matchmaking is what I posted earlier which means that the SBMM and EOMM elements in the matchmaking are very weak. Its mostly random when it comes to the skill of each players but it tries to put MOST of premade full trios in the same lobby, regardless of the skill of each players in those premade trios. - @StelioRokos @Midnight9746 @StelioRokos i don't think you two realise who i am lol (Biast12 on twitter), i talk with some of the devs on a daily / weekly basis, i have had long discussion with those who even makes the matchmaking system in apex and there's 0 part of EOMM, they're using a better made version of the one they're using in Titanfall 2 (a dev have also said this publicly)
also StelioRokos you're so called "stats" doesn't mean anything to show it's EOMM, it just means they got a really large SBMM, it sounds like you don't know what SBMM and EOMM even is tbh - @biast12 First of all, I literally never claimed it has EOMM. I claimed it doesn’t use SBMM. You’re ASSUMING I’m talking about EOMM as if there is only a binary between EOMM or SBMM.
I’ve also mentioned to another person in this exact thread I don’t think Apex uses EOMM.
Apex Legends does NOT use SBMM. It uses a system that simply puts games together.
Based on my performance metrics, my friends’ performance metrics, we should NEVER see Master/Pred players with their 4K/20-bombs and tens of thousands of kills. In fact, I would dare say my consistent below-average performance would bar me from being a Diamond player as well. However, I’m matched almost exclusively against Diamond+ players. I am literally the NOOB you hate to be queued up with because I will ruin your game, but yet I still get queued up with you. That’s the problem.
Also, it’s funny you mention that you “talk to the devs on a daily/weekly basis,” yet thousands of other players who have gone out of their way to try and open a dialogue with this company to tell them about the problems their game is having are getting NOTHING here on the forums, but that’s not the topic of this discussion. Maybe you could tell them about their MASSIVE smurfing problem. - @StelioRokos sorry but you literally said "Just because they say it, doesn't mean it's true." to my saying it's not EOMM and they told me it's not, i didn't assume anything because that was what you said
also who is saying someone with a 4K/20-bombs isn't same skill as you? they could either have bought it or just have been lucky like one day 5 seasons ago
also if you check my twitter will you see why i talk with them, even a good handful is following me, the reason you ain't getting nothing from then is because you're treating them like trash, but if you just there more open to learn instead of saying what you THINK is true and play it as a fact when it's not, then maybe they would be more open to talk to you - EA_Mako4 years ago
