Avoiding Nerfs is Neglecting Over-buffs

To the Apex Legends Development Team,

I recently read an interview where you reportedly discussed the current in-game meta. In it, you acknowledged the overpowered state of the Devotion, yet described it as "cool and well-done." You also apparently stated that nerfs are a last resort, and you'd try to balance by buffing other characters. This news was genuinely shocking to me.

Both excessive nerfs and excessive buffs should be avoided.

Are you truly looking at the character pick rates? Are you not noticing the unusually high pick rates of Ash, Alter, and Ballistic, while the number of characters with under 1% pick rate has increased

If this interview is indeed true, isn't that like a painter who, instead of fixing a mistake in their painting, just keeps adding more to it, ultimately ruining the entire piece? If you don't address the cause, you won't change the outcome.

Is the Apex Development Team truly willing to ruin their own work like that painter? I sincerely hope that this interview is false, and that you are, in fact, facing the cause of the current chaotic meta – which is over-buffing – with genuine commitment.

  • The developers deemed the experiment of giving all characters a dash a failure. It's only natural, then, given that giving Ash a dash was a mistake. The developers are reluctant to admit that giving Ash a dash was a mistake. Failure is inherent in trial and error. What are they afraid of?

  • Remember when the dev philosophy was "we don't want this to become Ability Legends"? I say nerf everyone across the board and just delete Ballistic.

its honestly crazy that it is that simple yet respawn have their thumb up their arses

  • Yup, I agree... the one thing they voiced they didn't want Apex to become, through their own volition achieved exactly that, and surpassed it.

And they wonder why the bulk of the player base no longer has any confidence in this Dev team.

Apex Legends, in my opinion is no longer a shooter game. It is a mobility game with abilities.

  • I agree with everything you said, but there's something to be gained by understanding why Respawn is following the path they're on, and it's pretty simple. Over-powered legends are fun to play. Kids want fun. The only people who look sideways at this process are veteran players like us, people who experienced the game when every legend had a purpose and they were all playable. Kids, new players, average-to-below-average players... they're all just looking for some fun, or for some edge they think will get them out of their low-platinum rut. And happy kids spend more money in the store. Especially on the over-powered legend of the season. Which is an easily tracked metric. And it worked once, long ago, with... I can't even remember which was the first legend to get a stupid buff, but I guarantee you they sold a lot of skins because of it... and so they've been doing it ever since. And expecting people like us to just adapt. Which I mostly do. The only one that ever brought me near to quitting the game was Ash. Bet she sold a ton of skins in the state she was in. But, after a season or two, they toned her down to more or less where she should be, and moved on to someone else. And that's how the wheels on the bus go round and round. Embrace the horror. It pays the bills.
