I would much rather have the loot box close itself when you take damage.
The amount of times I have hit ESC to close the box but because I'm holding shift and strafing side to side to reduce chances of getting hit. The Shift+ESC combo minimises the game then I am dead before I can bring it back up again.
My biggest issues with melee on left click is that if you press left click before the animation of unholstering your gun is completed it will put your gun away again and make you punch. For this reason I agree with your post.
I have the similar issues sometimes on PS4.
I'd suggest that they go with a panic style system. If you press any button that doesn't have a use in the inventory system it should exit the loot box. Same should go for the pathfinder scan feature. I have killed so many pathfinders who failed to find the exit button quick enough haha
