In-Game Feature: Global Chat (Also Local and Friends Chat)

Respawn should add followings in lobby:
1. Global chat (Group of some local chats, with ~0.5 or 1 incoming chat/second)
2. Local chat (With ~1 incoming chat/5 to 10 seconds)
3. Friends chat (To chat friends even if they are in-match or offline)

With features including but not limited to:
1. Click on other players' avatars to view their profile, stats, skins owned, match history, etc
2. Create customized (filters, e.g. ranked/trios/duos, server location, open mic/no mic, language) invitation that other players can click on to join their lobby
3. Click on other players' avatars to mute/report/invite to club

The main objective is so that people that don't have friends to play Apex with, can find someone to team up easily through Apex itself. A lot of players quit playing Apex because they don't have friends to play with and repeatedly destroyed while solo queuing plus having to deal with toxic randoms

I am aware that there are some big Discord servers out there, e.g Indonesia has Apex Legends Indonesia Discord server, but even then, not so many players are actively using those Discord servers to find someone to play with as it is very hard to find someone of similar skill level to play with.

Individual players may also set their own privacy settings to set the visibility property of their profile k/d, stats, skins owned, match history (just in case it is bad and they want to hide it).

I believe this will be a great feature and will improve the retention rate of players.

  • @Skimpp The global chat sounds like a very bad idea, as:

    - Players are already being rude in the team chat. This doesn't need to be on a global scale.
    - The game would get a bunch of bots spamming the chat. This would be spammed links to cheats, insults, "other" content, etc. The game already had an exploit a few years ago where players were able to talk in a global chat, and based on the things I saw being said, I'm glad Respawn patched it out.
    - We would see a huge increase of bot spamming in pro player's matches, as the spammers would use the fact that the pro player is livestreaming to reach more players.
    - During matches, players could call out where others are, (espeically if they had died and it let them talk in the global chat)

Local chat would have to be while in the lobby only, as it would allow more players to easily team with other squads. It would also have the other issues that the global chat would have, (except on a smaller scale).

As for the friends chat, this could work, if it has some limitations. For example, if you're in the lobby, and they're in the firing range, then yes, allow it. If they're in a ranked match, and you're in a pubs match, also that's alright. But, if you're both fighting in the same game, it shouldn't be allowed.

If we look at Apex Mobile and its introduction of a global chat, that alone should of been enough to not bring it to the main game. It was meant for players to find others to play with and to talk as a community. However, when I played Apex mobile, I saw nothing but spam, insults, players openly asking others to boost them, cheat with them, etc. in the main game of Apex, "other" content, threats, etc. and that was within the first minute of opening the chat up for the first time. I never opened it up again after that.

@Midnight9746Sorry, I misuse the word in-game here. I don't mean in-game as in in-match, but only in the lobby. I played Apex Mobile too so I see the importance of global, local, and friends chat.

    1. All global, local, and friends chat are only be available in the lobby
    2. Timeouts can be introduced to so that players can chat only once every 10-30 seconds for global and local chat
    3. I played Apex Mobile and I almost never see someone rude in the global chat or misuse it for selling cheats/boost at least in Asia, anyway those people can easily be mass reported by playerbase/manually by Respawn
    4. Add anti-spam bot to the global, local, and friends chat
    5. This global, local, and friends chat has nothing to do with pro players as players in-match will have their own chat boundary with their teammates in-match

I know many huge mobile games use in-lobby chat features and those games would be so dry without it.

@WTF_Huitzo If you mean push to talk, its a setting we all have for our own mics, at least on PC. I don't know about console.

If you mean muting your teammates, there's a button on the legend select screen that you can press to mute them. There's also a gameplay setting that blocks communication from everyone, or those who aren't your friend. There's also the manual mute on the squad tab while in a match. Its next to the report, block, and mute ping buttons.

@Skimpp So, you saw the mobile chat while in AS servers? I saw the chat while in the NA servers. What happens in different regions in terms of the chat, is something I don't know much about as I'm not in other region's servers. If I did end up in one, I wouldn't know the language, so not like I would know what they're saying anyways.

This kind of chat could just very well be an optional thing. I would personally have it off at all times.

@Midnight9746 but without the chat feature, how would someone find someone to play with? I find little to no friends from solely the post-match add friend feature through the teammates' banner in the lobby.

It seems like in Apex mobile, the global chat is set to continent, so my global chat is mostly from Asia and it is mostly English and I don't see any big issue other than a few players selling cheats that are easily banned upon reported.

I don't think not making chat feature just because of those few players makes sense. Respawn can simply unsend any sentence with a word starting with 'c' ends with 't', or starting with 'b' ends with 't' as a very simple solution to filter {cheat, boost} and any similar words. Not having friends to play Apex with is IMO a bigger issue as even pros can't even solo que.

How do you find friends to play with btw? Bcs I know a lot of people who dont have friends to play with, especially the low skilled players bcs most of the time no one add them back post-match.
  • @Skimpp I don't find friends to play with. I just solo que. Most of the randoms I get are toxic anyways. I'm so glad that Respawn added the option to auto mute teammates.

@Midnight9746 exactly. That's why you need the chat feature so you can find someone to queue with beforehand. At least for me, everytime I premade queue with someone, even with someone much better than me, they are never toxic; if I play very bad or do stupid things, they will only leave the queue after the match ended and find someone else, talk crap behind about me, etc.

During the first ~100h playing Apex, I also got a lot of toxic randoms, which are indeed mostly better than me at that time (bcs I was in Plat due to the broken rank system), but do not have friends to team up with, so they solo queued and ended up paired with bots like me. Added with SBMM, it is even worse bcs I need to fight 3 people with much higher skill than me. So the frustation is totally understandable.

I never get toxic randoms in the last ~200h playing Apex bcs I don't play like bots now and my gunfight is pretty strong relative to my teammates.

With chat feature, everyone can team up with others with similar K/D. So no one can be toxic. Even in Apex Mobile, I never get toxic randoms, bcs I mostly team up beforehand, and if those randoms are bad, just leave the queue, find someone else
