I really like this kind of (idea brainstorming).
I will add to it by saying:
Early game, either have a squad of AI folks roam the map (like Bounty Hunters).
They move in the direction of the Kill Leader (or) Champion Squad, but will shoot at anything in sight.
(problem with this is actually programming the AI to be good enough, but not god-like so average players don't get wrecked.)

Or a special loot crate, but which either takes a while to be 'opened', by firing at it (like a large, but 'doors damaged in transit' loot crate).

Or better still, have loot crates hold your usual 3 items + 1 'flare'. Having different types of flares, like an Armour Flare, Weapon Flare, Attachment Flare, Accessory (backpacks/knockdown shields flares).
Make it so that they take a little longer to drop than a normal loot crate, giving more teams, a chance to arrive at said location.
(and maybe have it only open if there is only 1 Squad within X Radius...so the crate won't actually open if it's currently being contested..which would be a nice touch..)
