Lootboxes are, and always will be, predatory as *. Think about it this way;
Most people who will have spent money on lootboxes will PROBABLY have spent that money in order to get 1 or 2 specific skins. These players also would have likely just bought the skin had it been for sale on it's own in a regular * shop.
This is practically stealing money from that person because they want to know exactly what they're getting when they buy it, but the game hasn't given them the option.
Lootboxes are put in place not so that a game can continue/manage to be free-to-play, but so that developers can make more money in less time. Take the cosmetics in this game for example.A legendary cosmetic costs what, 1,200 crafting materials? More or less?
I've played for the last 2 days straight as soon as I've gotten home and the ONLY way to get more of that currency is by rolling for more lootboxes. There aren't any dupes, so you'll always get something new right? Well take all of the cosmetics in the game (taking into account even the useless things like all the banner crap and the quips), and divide that by 3.For every character.
Even the ones you don't have unlocked already.
I've rolled a ton of higher tier stuff for the two characters that are locked, and the only way to get the in-game currency that allows access to the MAJORITY of the cosmetics is to get MORE lootboxes. You can't even buy the items directly with Apex coins...so what's the argument here? The rotating shop that sells a character skin for 2 Legends at a time that takes a week to rotate? Why not just allow people to buy them? Because lootboxes are a predatory way to scam more money out of players.
Lootboxes are really only there as a smoke and mirror tactic to get whales to spend more money searching for that perfect skin and to pad out the game time for more casual players. Just look at how they explain it themselves; (https://www.ea.com/games/apex-legends/news/player-spending-principles)
Look at principle number 5, and go out and find me the monkey who prefers lootboxes to an actual in-game store, if given the choice. All it does is change the player's goal from "I want to play to win because winning is fun" to "I want to play because if I don't play I'll never unlock that Legendary vanity item".Furthermore, "don't like it, don't buy it" doesn't work for something like this because respawn DIDN'T have lootboxes in their last game. They've included them here because even though most people don't buy them (at least, I'd like to think it's "most" people), they still make boatloads of money because there's always going to be hundreds of people out of the thousands that play that will spend even more hundreds of dollars on them just by themselves. The only way this problem can gain any traction is if the detractors not only refuse to buy them, but actively encourage others to do the same.
If you genuinely think that Respawn (backed by * EA GAMES of all companies) couldn't afford to keep this game alive without lootboxes, then I strongly suggest you look up the current value of EA's stocks, even after all the mud their name has dragged them through.
- No company in their right mind would finance a game which is not going to offer high returns.
That said, why couldn't they charge $100 for a legendary skin for those who can afford it, and explicitly encourage players to earn those rewards through gameplay? ie, Overwatch's golden weapon skins for season currency, could easily charge an unreasonable amount of money to allow people to skip 'earning' them, but the community backlash would be far worse than that of the lootbox drama, so it will never happen. Well, it certainly is pure EA quality, just another cashcow game with no real content or story with 'legends' which are so * mundane and comical with no depth of character, it sickens me.
You’re more than likely just bad at the game because you don’t even have to touch the loot boxes to play or be good at this game. . . . So be your troll self and go back to the bridge you camp under
as for people stating loot boxes are “predatory” and defines “gambling” if you CHOOSE to buy them so be it knowing the risk otherwise these companies put that out there since it’s scientifically proven you’ll be tempted to fork out the $5 to $30 dollar range regardless. People that complain more than likely also have purchased a loot crate in the past .. yet your here..
its simple the game is great itself
don’t buy loot boxes unless you know the risk
And don’t mind others for doing so not knowing
You're blowing this way out of proportion.
This is absolutely ridiculous! You do not need to spend money on lootboxes which means it is not gambling. You can also grind out everything in this game with no real money spent from just playing and getting materials overtime to craft whatever you want... You only spend money if you want to. Having lootboxes gives players a reason to get excited about getting something rare by chance, otherwise you still have the ability to earn that item from just playing the game. People need to stop complaining about everything, its a free game and you still find things to complain about, it blows my mind.
I have nothing in general against lootboxes in a freetoplay game. I only think many of the cosmetic items like weapon skins look a little bit to childish and silly. There are to many skins where the weapon glow in ugly colors or have some very generic looking low resolution attachments around them like chains. I have nothing against collerfull multi color weapon skins, if they are done well. But some of the textures on them like those blue glowing handguns look just to silly. They look like some 9 years old kid paints a overly unnecessary overcomplex weapon at school, with weaponparts which seem to have no function other then to look intimenating, which he finds cool looking. Just like out of some transformer movie.
To be more clear about it, i do not mean the general weapon design. I love the look of weapons like the large 50mm sniper, the wingman or the tripple take. The general design of those weapons is well done. But some of their alternate color skins where they start glowing and stuff makes them look really cheap. Especially because of low quality shaders and low res textures on those alternate weapon skins.
Another good example is the pathfinder robot. His core model just looks uninspired, especially his head which looks like a flashlight. I think the robot from lawbreakers worked better designwise:

I don't mind them since it's purely cosmetic and it's not p2w and doesn't affects skill. Hopefully the grind to unlock legends is not too high
- Since the loot boxes does not affect the gameplay (there is shop rotation with skins and battle pass soon) I'm perfectly fine with that. By that if you feel lucky you can try to get a legendary skin before anyone else. And the other thing is that from leveling you get one lootbox just to have something which is nice (because if that I was able to grind some nice skins in Overwatch just by playing and not buying anything).
So if that doesn't make anyone stronger in the match and it's not even the only way to get skins it's fine.
