Promote Competitive Teamplay

Apex desperately needs a better competitive outlet and ecosystem in-game. Everybody doesn't want to be solo queue demons and skirmishers. Some of us just want to be team players. 🤝

Team play: refers to the cooperative effort and mutual assistance displayed by members of a group working together toward a common goal.

Apex Legends Team Roles: In competitive and high-tier Apex Legends, a standard three-player squad divides itself into three distinct tactical combat roles: Entry Fragger, Re-Fragger (Secondary Fragger), and Anchor, with one player simultaneously acting as the In-Game Leader (IGL). These meta-defined play styles operate alongside the game's official mechanical character classes (Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Controller, and Support).

Apex Legends Competitive Playstyles: In competitive Apex Legends, team success dictates choosing between Zone, Edge, or Hybrid macro play styles. Teams select their strategy based on their spawn Point of Interest (POI), team composition, and overall comfort with either early position or aggressive fighting.

Apex needs to focus more on team play over individual play.

Apex needs to provide a better experience for players who enjoy specific team roles, not just skirmishing.

Apex needs to provide a more "consistent" competitive environment for players who enjoy that experience at all skill levels within the game. Promoting solo queuing limits various strategic play styles, because solo queue players have predetermined play styles, and mindsets, that are hard to bridge instantaneously for each match; team chemistry

Personally, I will follow (shadow) my teammates throughout a match. I don't ping a lot. I don't boast. I just play. The video below is an example of how I play Apex, solo queuing. My Maggie was the IGL/Fragger, Gibby was the Re-Fragger/Support, and I enjoy being a strong Anchor. This was a decent solo queue match.

Apex Legends Ranked Teamplay

I could easily play like everyone else, but I prefer the Anchor role. Playing Wattson is the best way I can help my team win. She does so much to counter other Legends. I like to rebound in fights, not run away. One day before I'm too old I hope I can play a game mode that brings out the best in my play style, because currently it's a hit or miss. And one day Gibraltar will have a prestige skin. 🤷‍♂️

Team play is the best play. Period. Let's have fun, chill, and be team players. Now that's something to boast and brag about.

Also, deathbox respawns is a great addition to the game. The mechanics in Apex are near flawless, but there's no game mode that exemplifies this aspect.

Lastly, I've read a lot of comments about the upcoming update that prevents stacking for Diamond+. The players that prefer solo queuing want everyone to play uncoordinated and sporadic because that's how they play. IMO, that's the wrong direction for a trios based game. Find a team and compete. No excuses.

    Nice read. 🙂

Maybe they can do multiple things at once. Fortnite is doing it and that's why they're still the #1 free to play game on PS5. 🤷‍♂️

The game I'm most surprised by is Overwatch. They made some great changes for their game. They've figured out how to keep their competitive integrity while also catering to their casual community.

Counter-Strike is another good example. Some people thought Valorant would overshadow and outperform CS.

Escape from Tarkov is another example. A lot of new extraction shooters on the market, but they're holding strong with their core gameplay.

I keep up with gaming as a whole, not just Apex. I just think Apex is a cool game that's fun to play because of the team aspect.

Team play isn't for everybody, I get it. 🙂

  • I really do want you to have the game you want to have, but I'm not seeing how you get from "Apex needs to focus more on team play over individual play" to any concrete methods for encouraging randoms to play more as a team member. I, as an example, have watched every YouTuber there is and I know exactly how team play is supposed to work. But there are people in this game who are not constitutionally capable of surrendering their own free will to the whims and poor decision making of their random squadmates. I would be one of those people.

I feel like you're edging up to one potential solution without either realizing it, or at least saying it out loud. I've been saying it out loud for years and I'll repeat again here and now: this game begs desperately for PLAYSTYLE BASED MATCHMAKING. It's been tried in other games and never, that I know of, met with much success. But from what I saw those were always failures of execution, not fundamental flaws in the premise. Apex needs an elaborate questionnaire concerning individual play styles and preferences, and you shouldn't be allowed into matchmaking until you've completed it. And then the matchmaker needs to weight those play styles as THE single most important factor in matching a squad. Not a lobby, just a squad. It needs to weight it far above skill, imo. I'm a relatively skilled player and I would rather play with complete scrubs who share my match goals than with the best players in the game if all they want to do is drop hot and try to shoot their way across the map.

I would also like to encourage Respawn to create a mode in this game that is not team-based. I know they've tried in the past and largely, imo, failed. But that doesn't mean it can't be done. And if it was done successfully then that might well leave trios and ranked with a pool of players who are less likely to try soloing a team game. Maybe?

    Food for thought.

  • After typing this post I looked for my video on YT and while doing so I came across the Nickmercs video below talking about the same thing, posted 14 hours ago.

A Message To The Apex Community

Discriminating against stacked teams has to stop. 🤦‍♂️ Go find someone to play with. Be nice to your teammates. Requeue with like-minded players. You only need two people. 🤷‍♂️

The devs need to focus on more social networking solutions for this community. We need a chat system, longer previous players list, voice chat party finder, friend suggestions list, clubs, etc.. Fortnite has all of these options. Players don't mic up or they unmute their mic to talk after bad plays or losing to be disrespectful. Things need to change.

We'll see how the matchmaking test works out. It's easy to do this type of test at the end of the split, but how will this work in the beginning of a split. I don't want to share hypothetical opinions. We'll see what happens.
