Re: New characters in Apex - in which direction the gameplay is moving?

@ASKE__101Well I assume the reason why is balance.

If they make something completely new, they have to be sure its not op.
Less to think about and to balance if it's similar

indeed. if they create something completely new and its completely busted, thats going to be the meta for the whole season, because respawn does not do hotfixes. if theres a bug, its going to be in the game for a whole season. if its underwhelming, nobody will play that character for the whole season, and the people that would have mained that character forgets about them and goes back to their previous main. this specifically is more of a problem with their update cycle, but this could be a symptom of that. compare this to warframe, another game with long update cycles, and they usually push out 3-4 hotfixes in the first month, with some tasty red flavor text in the all-chat. in warframe problems get noticed, then fixxed. in apex, its often unclear if respawn even notices the problem.

  • Maybe that's the point, or maybe they just don't set themselves the task of "creating memorable, concise characters with unique mechanics" rather than controversial remixes.

Maybe the creators of the characters do not have a leader who would demand a result from them with a specific goal:
    1. A memorable character can become part of people's popular culture.
    2. People spend more time in the game because of the non-linearity of the game.

Or if they have a horizontal structure in the team, then they themselves do not realize the importance of this.
That's why I wrote this post and I want to tell them about it.

Disagree 100%. These new hybrid legends usually launch very over-powered and the reason is simple. The more they push players out of legacy legends and into new legends, the more those players are likely to spend money acquiring new skins. I'm not saying it's evil, but love of money is the root of rainbows and unicorns?

I get they're here to make money. That's fine. I just wish the developer themselves would come out and say explicitly that "balance" is not the priority in the creation of new legends. That way, if a player chose to stick with an old legend, then it's on them for not choosing a "two free kills per game" legend like Valkyrie or Seer or Vantage. It's rough on the player base to let them find out the hard way over the course of a season or two that they're going to have to redefine what "competitive" means for their main.

@reconzero Yeah. The new legend is the Marquee draw every season. And Apex is all about making money. Still, there are different reasons people could/should want to play the new legends. Unique and interesting gameplay can be just as compelling as sheer power.

Apex is a game, it's first priority should be fun experiences. Focusing on uniqueness in design reinforces that directive. If gamers are compelled to play a Legend because of power -- the desire to win -- it's no longer a game, it's a sport.

"Unique and interesting gameplay can be just as compelling as sheer power."

Very true, and yet how many different gimmicks can they come up with for new legends? Apparently none, since the last quite-a-few have just been rehashes of abilities we already have. Take an old ability, maybe put a different visual on it, add in a double tactical, and boom! New (old) legend with extra stuff. I guess there really is nothing new under the sun.
